Your Outdoor Summer Adventure, Delivered

By: Art Gib

Summer's here, so for many of us, vacation is the at the forefront of our minds. But with current global conditions as they are, it may be best if those of us in the southwest U.S. didn't stray far from home! Lucky for us, there are so many adventures to be had right in our own backyard, especially for those that enjoy being outdoors. So if you need ideas for your getaway, this advice is for you.

If you have little vacation time because your leave is unpaid or you've had to use it earlier in the year, then finding campgrounds in your region is the way to go. Locating these via the internet is typically very simple, but make sure you also find out all the nuanced rules for reserving and using those areas.

How much do you have to pay (if anything at all)? Are there garbage facilities, or are you responsible for packing out your waste? Make sure that you observe all these regulations to keep nature clean and pure for the next campers and the wildlife sharing the space.

Consider the natural wonders found in state and national parks throughout the western United States. Living in central Utah has meant minimal traveling time to such sites as the Arches, Zion National Park, and the Grand Canyon. Of course, you can't neglect Yosemite, Yellowstone, and other famous preserved lands.

While many travelers prefer to camp in these spots as well, there are often relatively luxurious accommodations in the vicinity, so if you'd prefer a hot shower and a comfy bed at the end of the day, you be assured they're within reach.

Summertime is peak season for many kinds of hunting, especially in areas like Idaho and Montana. Montana mule deer hunting is tremendously popular for hunters at every skill level. Guided fly fishing in Montana is also appealing during the fair conditions of the summer months.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, make sure you do thorough investigation into the sort of license you will need and how to obtain it. If you decide to go on any kind of guided trip, you will most likely be able to obtain that information through the coordinators. But be sure to start early!

A stay-cation is often more exciting than you would think. There may be restaurants or activities in your vicinity that you've always wanted to try but have never taken the opportunity to this point. So go for it! Just minutes away from my home, rock climbing, rafting, and hot springs beckon. So forget Florida and New York. I'm staying out west!
