Why Would Anyone List Their Car For Sale Online?

By: Ryan Letermen

In simple terms, why not? As long as you do not give out any personal information in your ad, it is safe. You take the calls; you decide who you want to meet. The ball is always in your court.

Prior to the advent of the internet, the options were limited for car sellers. You could park your car in your driveway with a “For Sale” sign on it, or you could put a sign on the back window and drive it around and hope for the best.

For a few more bucks you could place an ad in the local newspaper or magazine specializing in used car sales. This took some preparation so your ad would go in before the publishing deadline.

You could always trade in your old car for a down payment on the new one you are buying from a dealer. You could also consign your vehicle to a dealer and get a few cents on the dollar for it, much like a pawn shop.

The internet offers smashing opportunities to anyone wishing to sell an item, vehicles included. Online ads will not limit the seller to four lines of copy. You could write a book on your car if that's what you wanted to do. You can describe the vehicle in detail as to its condition, repair records, driving history and anything else you find pertinent and will generate excitement to those in the market for a car.

You will include photos of the car in your ad, of course, but you can still wax ecstatic over the car's appearance. You will also need to include the selling price, mileage and your contact information.

Most sites allow one photograph, many will allow more. Whatever, you want the car to be sparkling clean before you snap that picture and take those shots in sunlight rather than shade for best results. If the site allows you more than one picture, take pictures from the angles that clearly show the car's condition.

You do not have to concern yourself with publishing deadlines. You can download your ad in the morning and receive calls immediately. You may sell your car before your newspaper ad would have even run.

The old-fashioned classified ads in the newspaper can be expensive – especially if you give a lot of detail. On-line card ads are relatively inexpensive and give you plenty of room to describe your car?and some sites run them for free. And there are several sites who guarantee a sale or your money back; while others say they will keep running your ad until your car sells.

Do some homework before selecting the site (or sites) you want to use. Go online yourself and look for a car similar to yours, just to see how easy it is to navigate that particular site. Also, ask your friends and family if they have ever used any of the selling sites. Word of mouth is the best recommendation.
