Why Leadership Skills Are Increasingly In Demand

By: Stella Manson

Good leadership skills can be critical when it comes to business success, regardless of the industry, people in management positions require leadership training to ensure they can overcome the constant flow of challenges necessary to run a business successfully. This kind of training is vital to grow and retain talent, improving attrition rates, in businesses workforce.

Whether you believe it is more important to be a great motivator or the key skill is communication, these softer skills are a great to have in addition to your arsenal of academic skills.
A lot of employers have vacancies they are not able to fill because there are simply not enough people of sufficient calibre for leadership roles. A large survey was recently carried out on many public and private sector organisations, and the results showed that there is a real lack of people with leadership skills, even amongst people with many academic credentials.

However, despite the massive demand for people with leadership skills, in another recent survey, out of the 1000 people interviewed, nearly two thirds said they felt they had good leadership potential. Not only this, more than half said they felt that leadership was more of a learned skill rather than something you are born with.

If you feel that leadership training could either benefit you in getting the career or the promotion you want, or you own a business and believe that these skills could improve your business as a whole by providing your managers with skills that could help improve the workforce, there are many different forms of training available.

So what characteristics are important for someone to work on to become a good leader? It's said that the most important factors are to be passionate, committed to their cause and to have integrity. Trust is vital in business.

Trust can be built. Fortunately there are many ways to build trust, such as taking responsibility for when things go wrong rather than laying the blame on your team. It is also crucial that leaders are passionate about their objectives, so this enthusiasm can be passed down to the people that work for them. If a leader is not enthusiastic about a task, then the executives can lack morale as a result.

It is also said that it is important for leaders to be committed to their business. Good leaders usually have very rigid self-discipline, leaders will always do what needs to be done whether it involves going above and beyond or not. Good leaders are required to be very good at managing their time, allocating time effectively and delegating work to the right people to maximise productivity.
