Why Gas Efficient Vehicles Benefit Everyone

Everybody has their own views about the current movement towards more energy efficient devices, especially automobiles. Some people have embraced the movement and have purchased hybrid, electric, or other types of fuel-efficient cars. Other people see these fuel-efficient drivers as pretentious and obnoxious, a stereotype that isn't always untrue. While the likability of the people driving these cars is up for debate, the benefits of them buying and driving these cars is not. Fuel efficient cars benefit not only their owners, but all of society.

These newer, more fuel-efficient cars, usually score much better on emissions testing. This means that they contribute less to pollution, leaving our air more breathable. Scientists have been going back and forth about global warming, climate change, and other effects of pollution, but the notion that pollution is generally bad for our environment is agreed upon. Just drive around Las Vegas and you can see the smog that has resulted from years of concentrated pollution. Those who drive these environmentally friendly cars are cleaning up the air not only for themselves, but for everyone.

The more people who drive fuel-efficient vehicles, the lower gas prices will get. Prices are driven by supply and demand. The less gas people buy, the lower the demand. Assuming the supply remains the same, this lower demand will result in lower gas prices. This means that those still driving gas-guzzlers may actually be benefiting more from fuel-efficient vehicles than those who actually own and drive them. We all want free gas, and the more people who start conserving gas, the closer to free gas prices get.

Some people don't buy these fuel-efficient cars because they simply can't afford them, but those who have already bought these vehicles are helping with that as well. Automobile manufacturers wouldn't make fuel-efficient cars if nobody bought them. Originally, prices were high because the technology was new, but also because there were very few options, and very little competition. With fuel-efficient cars being so popular, just about every manufacturer has joined the game, and they are now competing to provide the most affordable fuel-efficient vehicle.

So the next time you are driving down the road, look to your left, and see a hipster smiling smugly to himself while driving his hybrid car, you can still not like that person, but at least appreciate what they and their vehicle is doing to benefit society as a whole.
