You get awfully picky about your selection of socks when you're fighting blisters. I no longer wear cotton socks when hiking. I've switched to acrylic blends or socks madr from CoolMax. These high-tech fabrics wick the sweat away from the foot and help prevent blisters.What's the big deal about wicking socks?

Sweat tends to soften the skin on your foot and thereby makes it much easier to form blisters as your foot rubs on the insides of your shoes. Friction such as this can easily tear soft skin. So, any sock that is able to keep your feet drier will, thus, also keep blisters at bay.

The Walking Thorlo is padded in the spots where your walking foot receives striking forces. By doing a better job of wicking your sweat away from the skin of your foot, these great socks, made of CoolMax, help reduce foot blisters. We tried them out on a 10K walk. Thorlos hiking socks were successful on one other hiking trip too. For twelve years, we used the same couple of pairs of Thorlos in frequent hiking and washings.

Generally, there's no need for a thickly padded sock for hiking. However, using a sock that's too thin may well lead to blisters. - I discovered that I needed to stay with medium thickness socks rather than the thin varieties.

Decreasing friction and providing excellent wicking action are the attributes of the double-layer socks. According to Wrightsock "This movement between the two layers of the sock replaces what would be movement between your foot and an ordinary sock. When this movement, within the sock layers occurs, the friction is absorbed and the foot receives much less, if any, additionaly friction."

Do white socks bore you? If so, you should make a visit to your local shoe or sports shop and check whether or not they carry CoolMax sock that have some of the cooler designs and colors.
