When Is The Best Time To Begin My College Search?

By: Amanda Greene

There are some men and women who believe that you must begin applying to colleges as soon as possible and therefore they begin applying in their Sophmore year. The only problem with this school of thought is that there is little that has been accomplished in the first year and a half of high school and most colleges will not likely even consider accepting a student until they have at least completed some level of college enterance exams and have at the very least completed half of their junior year, some even wait longer then that.
If you're a high school student who is concerned with getting on the fast track of getting into a good school or with getting acceptance into one of the better schools with at least a partial scholarship then the furthest thing from your mind should be when to fill out the college applications. Instead you should be considering what you will be presenting to the colleges of your choice and how this information will be received.
Many students and their parents become so intensely focused on grades that they simply forget that most colleges aren't only looking at a student's GPA but they are looking for students who are well rounded and have civic and community involvement as well as school involvement. Extra curricular activities weigh in pretty heavily with most of the top schools and any student who wants to attend had best be able to show not only good grades and test scores but also an assortment of other assets that they possess.
It can be difficult to have it all, but if you want to impress a college then do what you need to do and study and get good grades. Holding off filling out college applications until the middle of your Junior year will allow you to build up a steady record of not just being a good academic but also being involved and well rounded. Instead of wasting time filling out applications in your Sophmore year you'll be better served to use this time to beef up your qualifications and get into a better school.
Filling out college applications too early can really be a kiss of death. While you'll want to get your applications in before the end of your Junior year it's prudent to wait until you have enough information on your transcripts for a college to really make a determination about whether or not you meet the criteria that particular school is looking for. What your high school transcript contains is much more important then getting it to the school early.
