What Does Living In The U.S. Mean To Us?

By: Knight Pierce Hirst

If you live in the U.S., you live in the country with the most millionaires - an estimated 5.2 million households. The Boston Consulting Group, which did the study, defines millionaires as having $1 million in cash and investments - excluding things such as houses, cars and investments in a business. In spite of the recent recession, the number of millionaire households worldwide increased 12.2% in 2010 to 12.5 million. Although these millionaires represent only 0.9% of all households, they control about 39% of the wealth. However, 15.5% of Singapore households have at least $1 million. It seems Singapore, the "Lion City", has the "lion's share".

If you live in the U.S., June 3rd is National Donut Day. The holiday was originally established by the Salvation Army to honor the female volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during WWI. Now, with over 10 billion donuts sold yearly, National Donut Day is obviously celebrated more frequently. Donuts are the nation's top-selling, baked dessert and are second only to bread in total baked good sales. The yeast donut is the most popular and the most donuts are consumed in the Midwest. According to legend, the donut hole gets bigger as the economy worsens. Nevertheless, Americans enjoy donuts "holeheartedly".

If you live in the U.S. and are under age 50, there's a 96% chance you use Facebook. This was the finding of a 2011 Bank of America study that interviewed 418 consumers under 50. Fifty-one percent of those interviewed used the site more than last year, 68% checked it at least once a day and 39% checked it several times. Fifty-one percent commented on friends' status updates; 42% updated their own status. Considering 39% have more than 200 Facebook friends and the site has almost 700 million users, advertisers are finding new meaning in "face value".

If you live in Houston, you live in the world's most affordable city for doing business. That's according to PricewaterhouseCoopers' 2011 study ranking 26 cities. Houston had low real estate costs, low corporate taxes and no state income tax. Los Angeles ranked second because of being a hub of innovation and low costs of doing business. Chicago's flexibility of work schedules and entrepreneurial environment contributed to it being third. San Francisco, the financial hub of Silicon Valley's innovative economy, ranked fourth. The remaining 6 cities in the top 10 were all in other countries. Obviously, the U.S. "means business".
