What 4G Means for VoIP

By: Andrew Wiggin

Though VoIP is gaining widespread acceptance amongst telephone customers today, it's still a bit complicated to set up a land line using VoIP. That's because there's no single way to go about it unlike a PSTN phone which has been standardized for decades now. However, VoIP on the mobile phone is an entirely different matter. Using VoIP with your phone's Internet connection is as simple as downloading an application and making the call! Because of this, smartphone users are far more likely to know about and use VoIP compared to others.

However, the bottleneck when it comes to VoIP on mobile phones is the technology which provides mobile bandwidth. Much has been made of how mobile networks are not the same as wired ones and how data transfer speeds and bandwidth are far more limited in the case of mobile. While there was indeed some merit in this argument with 2G and even 3G technology, recent innovations and initiatives around the world are set to transform all that and finally bring wireless broadband on par with its wired cousin.

So far, Wi-Fi has been the only way to allow sufficient wireless broadband speeds where users can use an Internet connection without caring about straining the network. And this has also been an excellent excuse for wireless carriers to restrict bandwidth hogging applications to Wi-Fi only. Even though it's an accepted fact that voice over the Internet uses up a minuscule amount of bandwidth compared to services such as streaming video and online gaming.

4G however is a technology which allows us to have WiFi like speeds spread out over a huge metropolitan area. This finally removes the barrier to Internet usage on the go. The implications for VoIP are tremendous. Not only will data speeds be more than enough for people to use VoIP, carriers will also be forced to reduce the charges for wireless connectivity since the base of customers will increase dramatically and more and more people will start using their phones for data intensive applications such as watching movies on their laptops, tablets and smartphones.

And we're sure to see a mass exodus of customers moving onto VoIP. Low bandwidth on mobile phones was truly the last barrier to major VoIP adoption. And now that that's done away with, we're about to view the transformative power of Internet calling for the first time. LTE is the technology that's slated to become the face of 4G and we're all waiting for it breathlessly!
