Ways On How To Fight Jaw Contractions

By: John Chambers

There was a man who showed up all of a sudden in the office of a dentist in New York and this man claims that he has a chronic headache. He was desperate for a cure but unfortunately, among the specialists whom he consulted didn't have the remedy.

Quickly, the dentist could pinpoint and effectively treat the trouble which is TMJ or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, a lower jaw problem. The same problem was responsible for the neck and facial pains of a Virginia woman whose various physicians had misdiagnosed arthritis, for seeming earaches in another woman, and for apparent sinus pain in still another. The TMJ condition, which has earned the nickname of the great impostor because it can produce such a wide variety of symptoms and mimic many different diseases, is now estimated to affect 20 percent of the population and is completely overlooked in most.

Doctors are constantly conferred by victims of TMJ dysfunction, for these people experience massive unrelated symptoms. In effect, victims will be incapable of opening or closing their mouth and would be experiencing functional problems.

In fact, others experience a lot of pain such as migraines, sinus problems, atypical facial pain mimicking a tic douloureux or a temporal arteritis, or a neck or shoulder pain. On the other hand, others may feel no pain but will experience dizziness, tinnitus or ear ringing, or subjective hearing loss.

To put things into perspective, it's the pain that turns them neurotic, not neurosis that causes the trouble. In front of the ear located is the temporomandibular joint where the lower jaw or mandible hinges to the skull. A simple blow to the head or jaw or from opening the jaw too wide when biting or yawning may result to the joint getting out of adjustment.

The most common causes is clenching or gnashing the teeth when under pressure. The equilibrium of muscles and ligaments that control movement in the joint is upset once it is affected.

Muscle spasms will be felt due to a painful state. If the pain shoots out, it then radiates from small areas of great sensitivity called trigger areas within muscles.

Trigger areas in the TMJ muscle system can produce dull ache or stabbing pain not just around the jaw and the teeth but virtually anywhere in the head and in the neck and shoulders. The reason why jaws hurt is because it worsens when they are clenched in chewing, speaking, and brushing of the teeth and they are relieved when mouth is being opened.

In a minute, tests can be done by any physician or dentist according to him to easily identify TMJ dysfunction. Just by mere listening, when the jaw moves, it creates a clicking or creptitus noise similar to the sound of someone walking on gravel and with this, it can be done. The muscles and the TMJ on each side are felt by others to detect any spasm.

In some cases, the use of jaw muscles is needed in order to restore balance. They may be asked to perform simple exercises in addition to making a conscious effort to chew on the other side as well.

So first, while mouth is opened wide, the tip of the tongue is placed far back on the roof of the mouth. Now this second exercise is intended to strengthen muscles by moving the jaw in a number of times from the weak side.

Applying moist heat for 10 minutes thrice daily to both sides of the face is advised to patients for them to combat spasm as well as eating soft foods often. Now, dental schools and hospitals have set up special clinics for TMJ dysfunction. This proves that a growing number of doctors and dentists now see the importance of the TMJ problem.
