Volunteer Overseas To See Just What Kind Of Difference You Can Make

By: Neil Gibson

The world's an awfully big place. There is no denying this fact. But now, thanks to technology, it's getting smaller all the time. Advancements in technology are making crossing oceans easier by the day. The Internet and Skype are bringing us all together. When you can have a conversation with someone in Sierra Leone, the United Kingdom and Brazil, and someone from Iceland hops in “just because”, you know you've got your finger on the pulse of something truly amazing.

The community of nations makes the world smaller and more powerful. This newly found power brings with it new responsibilities.

With all the connections one can make in this world, one can no longer turn a blind eye to the problems that exist everywhere on the planet. There are no strangers any longer. You can talk to people from anywhere in the world you so choose. These are the people you know, trust and care about.

Good for you if are one of those people who reaches out to someone in another part of the world. You are much needed. If you don't know where to begin, read on. Perhaps you will find a few good ideas on where to start.

Contact an organization that has dealings overseas. This is a good place to start if you are seeking hands-on volunteer work. There are many organizations around the world that offer volunteering opportunities. Some of these are medical offices, schools, churches and many other associations that are in continuous need of another pair of helping hands. Any one of these could give you a chance to see the world while making a substantial, positive difference in the lives of others.

The best part of volunteering with an organization that's actually going to send you overseas is that you have a chance to see the results of your work. There doesn't mean there aren't ways you can get involved at home as well, however.

You might think about organizing a charity drive to collect necessary supplies like clothing, shoes, school supplies, or cans of food. You can put a selection of these things in large boxes and ship them overseas wherever they are needed most. You might organize a fundraising campaign to raise money for your favorite charity.

If you are a college student, contact the person on campus in charge of volunteer opportunities. Many organizations partner with colleges and universities because they like to work with students to provide a cultural experience to fellow students and others overseas. This is a terrific way to dig in and make a difference with peers in foreign cultures.

Or you may even go so far as to consider pursuing a career in international relations. The State Department and numerous other diplomatic branches of the government regularly send people overseas.

Military service is another option and gives people a unique opportunity to interact with countries abroad, generally with needed reconstruction of infrastructures, while receiving all the benefits of working for the Federal government. A rock-solid career with the added spice of working overseas could be the stuff that dreams are made of.

Wherever it is that you do your volunteering, feel proud that you are doing something extremely worthwhile and with a little time will be able to realize that you had a part in doing something amazing for the world in which you and your fellows live.
