Visiting London? Let's Take A Look At How You Can Get To And Around The Capital City Of England

By: Sally Parker

As one of the most visited cities in the world, London is truly a part of the globe that has something to offer everyone, irrelevant of whether you're looking to get up close with ancient artefacts or dinosaur fossils or you're looking for authentic cuisine from any part of the world, be it Japan or Goa.

Due to London having such a wide variety of sights and attractions, although the centre of the city is heavily packed together and you could, if you wanted, walk to a substantial number of places, there are numerous transport options for you to choose from to get from A to B and as one of the major cities in the world, there is also a range of different transport options available to get you to London, all of which are detailed below.

Getting To The City

Fly - London boats three primary international airports - Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead - with Heathrow being one of the busiest airports in the world, serving 65.8 million people in 2010, making it a possibility to fly direct to London from almost any where in the world.

Drive - due to the UK's extensive motorway network, London can be reached from most parts of the country in only a few hours, especially if you're coming from north of the city and it is possible to reach London from Newcastle in half a day comfortably.

Rail - there are a number of major rail terminals in London, with King's Cross, Paddington and Euston being the most popular, with direct access to most areas of mainland UK from one of these three stations.

Ferry - although you can't get directly to London by ferry alone, the two major ferry ports in England, Dover and Portsmouth, are easily accessible by car and rail and are both less than a two hour drive away.

Getting Around The City

Tube - arguably the most popular way of getting around London, the London Tube system is an extensive network of underground and over ground trains that allows for quick and easy access to various parts of the borough.

Although some stations do become particularly crowded at certain parts of the day and it can be a little claustrophobic at peak times, it's one of the cheapest and most reliable forms of transport in the city.

Buses - what's particularly favourable about the bus system in London is apart from it being reliable and covering an extensive part of the entire London area, if you invest in an Oyster card for use on the Tube system, you can use this on the buses, too, making for even quicker and easier journeys.

Black cabs - just as symbolic and synonymous with London as the red Routemaster buses, black cabs may work out to be an expensive option, but with around 21,000 black cabs currently in London and with the drivers having to pass a difficult, in-depth test before they receive their license known as 'The Knowledge' (the test usually requires almost three years of training and a dozen attempts at the final test), you can guarantee that you'll be able to get to any destination in London as soon as you jump in one.

Car hire London - easy to arrange and affordable, particularly if you book in advance, car hire London isn't generally recommended for driving around the city itself, but if you're looking to head out of the city, car hire London can prove to be the perfect solution.

Walk - as mentioned, due to the close proximity of many of London's attractions, it's possible to walk around the city without needing to use any form of transport unless you're either trying to pack a lot into you're stay or you're planning on venturing outside of the city itself.

London is a fascinating city and one that everyone should take the time to visit, with these points all showing just how easy it is to get to and around the capital of England.
