U.S. Visa Processing Initiatives Welcomed in China

By: Eliana.Black

The U.S. Travel Association supports the announcement made by Ambassador Gary Locke on U.S. visa processing changes that aim to increase travel to the U.S. from China.
President and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association Roger Dow complimented the State Department on its response to the booming demand for U.S. visas in China.
"I want to thank Secretary Clinton and Ambassador Locke for their efforts in reducing visa interview wait times, increasing the amount of visas processed and developing initiatives, such as the interview waiver pilot program, to make business and leisure travel to the United States more accessible to Chinese citizens," said Dow.
In his recent speech in Beijing, Ambassador Locke stated that in 2011, the State Department processed more than 1 million U.S visa applications in China, an increase of 34 percent over 2010. In the first few months of fiscal year 2012, visa processing is up 48 percent compared to the same period in 2011. He also said that wait times for interviews had already decreased significantly in 2012, to less than six days at all posts in China.
In addition, the U.S. government is launching a new worldwide pilot program that allows consular officers to waive interviews for some non-immigrant visa applicants in the People's Republic of China. The program applies only to those renewing their visa within 48 months of the expiration of their previous visa, and must be within the same classification.
The U.S. Travel Association also expressed its supports to the Obama Administration's announcement on national strategy on travel and tourism to increase travel to the United States.
"This is the first time our country has had a national strategy and set goals for the amount of visitors we want to welcome to America. Not only will this increase traffic to America's wonderful destinations and attractions, but nearly half of the travelers will come to attend conferences and tradeshows," Dow stated.
