Tissot Watches...A Genuine Sport

By: Rob Bell

Father and child, Charles-Félicien and Charles-Emile opened the Tissot watch company in 1853. They managed the company with their own unique taste and innovative spirit for their craftsmanship. Ever since, the location of the headquarters of the watch business was positioned in Le Locle. Since the birth of the first Tissot watch, the timepieces that were developed have never failed attraction, for both the collectors and the community. Whether it was the exclusive materials that were used to produce the piece, or the technology; or the wrist watch's features, the invaluable pieces that were developed by the watchmakers and engineers made Tissot a pioneer in the watch industry.

Tissot watches have been noticed in many parts of the world and has also supported sporting events for decades, and this made the label Tissot and their wristwatches in ever rising demand. Tissot watches are acknowledged to be committed to sports, and also hopes that these beliefs will assist those of the younger generation. Tissot watches have been in collaboration with a number of sports teams all over the globe, including ice hockey, cycling and cricket. The Swatch Group invited Tissot to become one of their affiliates in 1985, and today Tissot and their wonderful timepieces are available in 150 countries around the world.

1853 was the time when the creation of the first watch began. Sixty four years later the "Banana" watch was created, and in 1930 the antimagnetic watch, the foremost of its kind, was produced. Twenty three years afterward the Navigator was introduced, and twelve brief years later the PR 516 was launched. In 1971 Tissot launched the first plastic watches and seven years later watches for the Lotus racers "The F1 watch" was created. Time never stood still, because in 1985 Tissot introduced the first rock watch, and a year later Tissot developed the Two Timer. In 1988 the first ever wooden watch was announced, and in '91 Tissot launched the Ceraten. It took seven years before the Titanium 7 was introduced in '98 and a year following the T-Collection was presented. In 2000, it was the T- Touch and two years following the T-Touch was unveiled in Canada.

Tissot watches have constantly been accepted in sports since 1974, and has involved itself with a range of sporting activities. Fencing and Formula One racing are just a few to reference. With the assistance of Tissot watches and their support, sporting programs have been taken to a new level, being the sanctioned partners and timekeepers on the tracks, road racing, cycling (like the Tour to Suisse) and also mountain biking championships which repeated up until a few years ago.

Tissot watches, however, made a reappearance in 2000 and became the acknowledged sponsor to the world cup mountain biking championships. They have surely made their mark in sports history and are now the Official Timekeeper in FIM Motorcycling.

There is no doubt that Tissot has carved a name for itself, and being as popular as they are, these wristwatches will continue to be the official timepieces, not only in the sporting world, but also to the general public.
