Tips on how to be fuel efficient

By: jeffrey eugenio

My friend said yesterday that he’s beginning to be afraid of what the future may hold.
I asked him why and he bluntly blurted that it’s because of the ongoing oil price hikes its already reach $100 a barrel I think.
Oil has really live up to its reputation as the “black gold.” I said.
So we end up thinking of some fuel-saving tips and ways that can help us squeeze some more kilometers from our precious fuel while waiting for the next inevitable oil price hikes. There are many options that are available to improve the performance of your vehicle. One way to make your car that runs in diesel to be efficient is by doing some performance modification which has become the craze as of late. Here are some other tips that can help you to be more fuel efficient.
1. The efficiency of the movement of your car parts underneath plays a vital role also if you want to save some car fuel so do check your car for defective wheel alignments and suspension, dragging brakes and a detuned engine. Your best fuel saving techniques will just be put to waste if you ignore all the other parts of your car. You should also be especially wary of under chassis defects if you want your fuel consumption to improve.
You also need your engines tuned and make sure that you have it tuned in certified shops to avoid being fitted with the wrong value/specifications of spark plugs. Why? Because a de-tuned engine with a wrong spark plug becomes a fuel guzzler and your engine become underpowered and more pollutant. 15 percent of power can be lost when a wrong valve is fitted in your car especially with diesel engines.
Have your vehicle checked for possible major tune-ups especially if your vehicle has older gas and diesel engines and don’t forget to replace the fuel filter every 10,000 km.
2. One of the most important tips that I can give you is sticking to your regular maintenance schedules. People usually tend not to give importance to maintenance of their cars but this can have major implication on your car’s performance. Air filters, for instance, clogged air filters not only force the engine of your car to work more than is necessary but could also lead to engine damage.
3. There are a lot of tips available on the internet that can help you improve your car’s mileage.
4. Here’s a list of diagnostic checks that your mechanic supposed to typically conduct if your engines has poor fuel mileages. Here’s a checklist that can affect your car’s fuel mileage:
• Dragging brakes.
• Transmission shift patterns for slipping, use of all gears, lockup operation.
• Owner’s driving habits including A/C usage, hard acceleration, carrying heavy loads.
• Emission control system.
• Vacuum hoses that has leaks, kinks or doesn’t have proper routing.
• Tire pressure.
• Check ignition system for wet plugs, cracks, wear, improper gap, burned electrodes, or heavy deposits, cracking or improperly connected ignition wires.
• Check for proper calibration of speedometer. In extreme cases, there may be engine problems such as poor compression or faulty fuel injectors.
5. If you are thinking of buying a new car keep in mind the power to weight ratio of the car. The smaller the engine, the more fuel you save is not always true. For example, a 1.8-liter engine might be a better fuel-efficient choice than a car with the same body type that has 1.3-liter engine.
6. Avoid hard braking and accelerating as if you are racing on the formula one circuit. Right Accelerating, cornering or braking smoothly can also extend the life of your car’s engine, transmission and brakes. Be a smooth driver, if not your passengers will surely feel nauseated every time you’re behind the wheel.
7. You should regularly check your car tires if it’s properly inflated since It requires more power to roll with underinflated tires.
8. You should only install roof racks if you need to load anything on your roof. Roof racks add to the aerodynamic drag of the car.
9. Don’t use your car if your destination is within walking distance. Walk, bike or jog is a healthy alternative for you. Not only will you save on gas, you might add months to your life just by doing that healthy alternative.
10. As much as possible load up at night and always remember to tighten up your fuel cap. Gasoline can easily expand and evaporate in hot weather and from your fuel tank if the cap is loose.
11. Plan your trips. Experts note that several short trips on a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multipurpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm plus with a little planning, you will also reduce wear and tear on your car.
