Thinking Ahead of the Disaster

By: Tom Selwick

It is very important to protect your family from starvation and hunger following a surprise natural disaster. The best way to prepare for this potential occurrence is to build up a long term food supply that will meet all of the needs of your family.

As you build up this food supply, there are several things that you will need to keep in mind. The first thing that you will need to keep in mind is that you should include as many of the foods that your family typically eats in it as possible.

While some of the items cannot be stored for long periods of time, you may be surprised by how many you can store for quite a long time. For example, if you learn how to can the fruits and vegetables from your garden, you will have these things for a year or two before they go bad.

This is a great way to include the nutrients that are needed from fruits and vegetables in your long term food supply. However, you will want to make sure that the cans seal correctly, or the items will go bad when stored for too long.

By storing items that your family is already familiar with, there will not be the hard transitional phase when you go from a broad, steak dinner, to wheat cereal. Instead, you will be able to prepare many of the meals that you normally enjoy, even if they are little bit simpler.

This can provide a lot of comfort and relief during the time of high stress when you are relying on your food storage. A little of something familiar can help your children relax and feel more at ease, even if they are sleeping somewhere different.

The second thing you will want to try to do is incorporate a variety of nutrition. You cannot expect to eat wheat cereal every day for every meal and expect to stay healthy.

While it is food and while it will keep you alive, it does not contain all of the things that your body needs to fight illness and to stay well. You do not want to risk illness during a time of high stress like this because the medical emergency personnel will probably be stretched quite thin.

Many others will probably get injured from a result of the natural disaster and they will need medical attention from these people. As a result, you may or may not get the help you need if fall ill.

Even if you can be seen by the medical staff, they may or may not have the supplies that are needed to treat you properly due to the damage that occurred. As a result, you will have to wait until more medical supplies arrive, which could be anything from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

This is part of why it is so important to be self-reliant. If you are depending on the government to supply you with the food you need, you will probably end up quite hungry.

It often takes a while for enough supplies to arrive to meet the demand. However, by preparing yourself, you will be able to provide for your family.

The third thing you will want to keep in mind is that you should include items that will be special needs of different members of your family. For example, the mother in your family may be pregnant at the time that the disaster hits.

If this is the case, you will want to make sure that you have an extra supply of vitamins on hand so that the baby will receive everything it needs to develop properly. If there are other concerns, you will want to take steps to provide for those concerns as well.

In addition, you may have a small baby which will need an extra supply of formula, diapers, clean water, and other supplies. If you have a toddler, you may need to know how to make baby food that he or she can eat out of the food that you have stored.

This often takes extra tools so that you can properly puree the food. As a result, you will need to think about this ahead of time so that you can provide for every member of your family.

It is important to think about these things ahead of time so that you do not realize you do not have an absolute necessity. By preparing ahead of time, you will be able to save your family from a lot of discomfort, illness, and even death in some cases.
