There's Still Room For The RPG Shop In Today's World of PC and Console Gaming

By: Art Gib

You step through the doors and immediately feel like you've walked into the home of a dear, old friend. Your gaze passes over the colorful boxes of all the independent board games and past the shelves of guides to a variety of RPG game worlds. Beneath the Magic booster packs on the counter, you admire all the Warhammer figures on display behind glass. You walk toward the tables in the back and greet friends you feel like you've been through hell and back with, though you met some of them just last week. Yes, you're at the RPG shop, the home of miniature games, the abode of gamers.

There was a time when the term "gamer" referred to those who played pen-and-paper role-playing games and strategy games featuring painted miniatures. These days, though, most self-proclaimed gamers are more likely to be referring to the hours they spend mastering first-person shooters on their console of choice or leveling up toons behind a computer monitor. Many of these gamers, especially the younger ones, may not even know what a d20 is.

In theory, virtual gaming ought to be the obvious choice for some role-playing fun. With computers running things, you don't have to worry about keeping track of your player's stats or rolling dice to determine the effectiveness of your attacks. A nice chip will take care of all that for you before the gamemaster can finish describing the setting, and experienced teams of artists and programmers have built virtual worlds for you that you can see right there on screen in front of you instead of having to flesh them out in your mind. Not to mention how much faster it is to find companions online than it is to drive to the game store.

So, why do old school pen-and-paper RPGs still have such a solid group of devotees? Because all those technological advances that seem like such great benefits can actually limit your creative use of imagination. Even the best video game has its limits. But there are no boundaries on where an imaginative gamemaster can take you and your fellow gamers. No matter how advanced the graphics in a video game eventually get, there's just no good substitute for the feeling of sitting down among friends and letting the dice tumble and your imaginations run free. Game store owners won't need to worry about empty D&D tables for a long time.
