Mathematics is a dreaded subject for many of us with memories of tough sums to solve and integrals to derive in school and in college. But there is no escaping the importance of this subject and calculations are an integral part of mathematics. Additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions are the basic foundation of everything that we need to work on in life. And these mathematical calculations are used in daily practical life as well. To budget and calculate taxes, balance monthly budgets and expenditures, add up shopping bills, work out monthly installments a knowledge of calculations is something that all of us have.

Mathematicians and inventors have constantly tried to make calculations easy for the average person. The first calculator was the Abacus, a brilliantly designed apparatus that made counting and adding up easy. This was widely in use in ancient times and has mention in many old and medieval texts. This abacus is still in use in many parts of Asia and Africa and there are schools that still teach mathematics with an abacus which experts believe is the best way to understand the concept correctly. Greece has the reputation of having invented the first analog calculation device. Records going back to 150 BC refer to an astrolabe that helped in calculations. Centuries later came the slide ruler in 1632. An inventor called Oughtred designed the rectangular and circular slide ruler. But the father of the computing age is Wilhelm Schickard, a German inventor who used a clock like mechanism to invent a digital calculator in 1623 and therefore known as computing clocks.

While these were the predecessors of the modern calculator as we know it the first patent for a calculating machine was filed in 1885 by William Burroughs. His was the first known calculating and listing machine that was to change the way we calculated. The mechanical calculator was invented by Charles Babbage who is also known as the inventor of the computer. Today this is a necessary gadget that is present in every house and office. From an expensive device to an affordable one these days’ online calculators are also available. There are various sites with online calculators that can help you to compute or calculate the most complex of formulae easily. These sites have easy to use steps that anyone familiar with the working of calculating machines can learn easily to use an online calculator.

From the days of manual additions and carry forwards we have come a long way with the calculator whose simple looks hide the immense utility of this device.
