The Real Perk to Shopping Online: Saying Goodbye to Standing in Line

By: Joe Villanvera

It might sound a little stereotypical, but as someone who's grabbed her girlfriends for a day of window shopping WAY more than once, I'm comfortable saying this: Women all over the country love to shop.

It's fun to get together and look at all the different items available in stores today and make comments on them while passing them around. To come together to find the perfect gift for someone or that jazzy item for someone's drab den is a great way to spend the day and bond with one's chums.

Shopping, however, is not all fun and games. Many people actually hate to shop and wonder how all those people can stand it. Whether you belong to the first group of avid shoppers among friends or the second group who loathe the very thought of shopping altogether, I'll bet there is one factor about shopping we all agree on.

Standing in a Long Line Doing Nothing is not Joy, it is Horror

No matter where you shop, be it for clothes, food or shoes, it seems there is always a long line in front of the cash register. Waiting in line is boring, frustrating and useless. The time seems to go on forever and ruins what may have started out to be a good day. Department stores and grocery stores must be saving wads of money by not hiring enough cashiers to quickly ring up the customers' purchases. Standing in line is an annoying waste of time.

We All Learned in Kindergarten to Wait Our Turn. Now what do we do?

There are a zillion things I can think of that I would rather do than stand in line. Watching grass grow or cleaning out horse stables are a couple that springs to mind. The reason I haven't taken an SUV full of kids to Disneyworld yet is because I don't want to stand in line for ten hours with a bunch of restless, squirming little darlings. This is where my eyelids start twitching and my speech slurs.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could be that person who elbows our way into the front of a long line with a story about our friend with labor pains that you've got to get to the hospital right now? That's a bit too dramatic for most of us. This is where the wonderful worldwide web comes into play.

If you have ever shopped for an item, checked the price tag, frowned and moved on, you already know how to bargain hunt on the web. But saving money isn't the only advantage of shopping online.

There is that wonderful advantage of saving time. Nobody has enough time: Time for work, for family or for fun. So when it comes time to buy something you need and can wait a few days for it, shopping online is heaven on earth. You don't have to pile the kids into the car, fight traffic, fight for a parking space and stand in line for hours with your bored brood.

Now you know the main reason why I shop on line. What's yours?
