The Key To Running An Efficient Parking Lot Shuttle System

Electric cars are used as shuttles in large parking lots to get customers into a venue quickly. Most visitors appreciate this amenity, especially in hot weather. However it's important to manage the fleet efficiently or you may suddenly find you don't have the vehicles you need when traffic is at its highest. Less Downtime

Many organizations make the mistake of plugging electric vehicles into a wall to recharge them when not in use. While this might work during periods of light traffic, what if you can't afford to take the vehicle off the line for several hours? The excessive downtime means large venues have to employ large fleets just to have enough active vehicles available.

A more efficient option is to use a battery changing system. Rather than recharging the unit inside the vehicle, a process that takes hours, the cell is removed and swapped with a fully charged replacement in a few minutes. Drained batteries are recharged in a dedicated facility without causing downtime for the fleet. Vehicles can be kept going 24 hours a day if necessary, with only brief stops for power unit replacement.

Longer Battery Life

Rechargeable batteries eventually lose their ability to hold a charge and must be recycled. This is a major fleet expense, so managers want to get the longest possible useful life out of a single power cell. The best way to do this is by recharging at optimal times.

Traditional plug-in recharging means vehicles are charged either too often, before the unit has discharged much, or too seldom, after the vehicle's controls show the power has fallen into the red zone. Deep discharges not only shorten cell life but can damage the unit's electrical system. Battery changing systems permit workers to swap out units when they reach an ideal level of discharge rather than trying to fit recharging into the vehicles operating schedule. Batteries last longer, and this change alone can pay for the battery changing system.

Worker Safety

Is it possible to swap power cells without investing in a battery changing system? Yes. Is it safe? No.

Workers removing old batteries by hand risk injury. They can receive painful and dangerous shocks because there is no way to turn off the electricity. The heavy cells strain backs, shoulders and other parts of the bodies. Dropped units can crush toes, or send acid spraying onto workers if one of the covers cracks.

Battery replacement systems do the heavy lifting without straining muscles. Workers stand away from the vehicles, minimizing the chance they will be injured by electrical shock or acid burns. When it comes to worker safety, it's not a good idea to take the cheap way out. The equipment is inexpensive and safe, and speeds up the swap process so the vehicle can get back in service much sooner.
