Random drug testing is a frequent practice in regards to employment and has been for many years. Many people feel like randomly selecting employees to endure drug testing is always necessary at work however there are people who feel differently. Some people carry the arguable notion that what ever a person does outside of the workplace is their personal business and isn't any business of their employer. Many employers will argue this notion stating that random employee drug testing reduces the occurrence of employee theft and would make the workplace a far more safer environment. Everybody is entitled to live their lives with a certain level of privacy that may include any recreational activities done outside the work place. Many think that random employee drug testing is compromising their private lives as well as more focus really should be put on other components of their employment such as attendance, job performance, and also the ability to deal with others. It can't be argued that drugs are a permanent social fixture and there are those that elect to engage in recreational drug use outside of a workplace however the argument is not about illegal drug use but whether or not what every person does in their spare time really should be known by their employers. It’s only reasonable that employers should drug test when there is probable cause for example a staff member reporting for work intoxicated but what about individuals who refuse to report to work under the influence and tend to be outstanding employees? Should they endure random drug testing despite their obvious conformity while their on a job?

As time continues to pass by it seems as though many of the standard principles of society have been lost, and our entitlement to privacy is currently being compromised from quite a few perspectives. It is even reaching to where we cannot maintain entitled levels of privacy even in our very own homes. Society is evolving so quickly it is outgrowing the foundations it has been produced from and violating the simple human rights of its members. There is very little argument as to whether drugs are a problem because within some instances they are even though the fact still remains that drugs are a part of our society and have been for some time. It would be even safe to say that drugs will likely be a an aspect of society for many years to come but the approach we take to manage problems created by dangerous or abusive drug use should really be more specific without being so broad to where we compromise ourselves. We must ask ourselves, should a person who smokes a marijuana cigarette over the weekend and reports for work on time and performs exceptionally well go through the very same drug testing policies as someone who comes to work high after smoking a marijuana cigarette on the way to their intended job?
