The Criminal Psychology Program at the Chicago School Tackles the Topic of Youth Violence

By: Dominic Lin

The Save Our School Children (S.O.S.) Program is teaming up with the criminal psychology program at the Chicago School to take on the topic of youth violence and help stop the spread of violence in the Chicago area.

This has been done in the form of town hall meetings where members of the community, leaders within the community, along with help of the forensic psychology masters program, work to establish the causes of violence, and discuss the various challenges that the youth of the city face in today's society.

Youth violence has become a growing problem all over the country and has become an issue that has gained nationwide recognition. Because violence appears to be cyclical and is dependent upon many different factors, it is very important that cities implement programs that head off certain factors in order to stop some of the violence before it ever begins. The Chicago School's criminal psychology S.O.S. program is dedicated to working with local law enforcement agencies and public school systems to provide services for those who are considered to be at risk for violence, those who are at risk of becoming delinquent, and arranging for programs to provide better education in order to ensure a successful future. By arranging for town hall style forums, students can speak out on what they experience in their day to day lives, and present information in a first hand fashion. This provides invaluable information and recommendations for those involved in the program.

The S.O.S. Program then uses this information to help form a three-pronged approach to assist local youth. One of the programs will focus upon youth development, the second will center on parent empowerment, and the third will be targeted toward the community for support and outreach.

The forensic psychology masters program is staffed by a variety of faculty who has more than twenty five years of combined experience and expertise on the issues of youth violence. Even though the program was originally meant to target just one issue, parent-child interaction, and provide therapy for that issue, the center has expanded its vision to help with issues of mistreatment of children, transitional living for youth offenders, delinquency, and victim related trauma. Everyone involved with this groundbreaking program is extremely proud of their efforts and the success they have had bringing students together with other local organizations to address serious issues and meet needs that have otherwise gone unmet within the community. The program also offers educational programs for further development as well.
