The Benefits (And Drawbacks) of Online Degree Programs

By: Gunter Jameson

Online degrees are growing more prevalent thanks to the decreasing costs of internet technologies that allow us all to connect over great distances at very little cost. And as these technologies become cheaper and easier to use, more and more people are seeking flexibility in their lives for work and school. An online degree may sound like the perfect way to increase your education, and it may be. However, it's best to look at the benefits and drawbacks of an online degree before you sign up for classes.

1) Flexibility
One of the best aspects of an online degree is the flexibility is gives you in your daily life. Some online classes have set deadlines, but many also allow you to work at your own pace and turn in assignments as you complete them. If you need to work faster, you can, but you can also schedule your class time between work, kids, and other constraints on your time. As well, you can work on a degree anywhere you want. For instance, if your job requires you to travel a lot, you can take a laptop with you and anywhere with an internet connection becomes your classroom. These benefits can be huge for people who already have jobs and busy lives.

2) Affordability
You would think that online courses would be cheaper than physical college classes, but that is not generally the case. Most online course cost the same to take whether online or in the classroom, depending on the degree program you've chosen. However, although the tuition costs may be the same, you will save on other costs. For example, if you can do your class work from home, you'll cut down on travel costs. And you'll save a lot of money on housing and living costs if you don't have to move or live on campus.

3) Respectability
The biggest drawback to online degrees is that they are still not very well respected in the professional world. Although taking online classes from a respected brick-and-mortar university may still carry the same weight as getting your degree in person (because no one in the professional world will know that you took online classes), universities that are completely online may not be as well respected as you might want. These types of universities are still looked down upon slightly by the professional community, but that attitude is changing.

The most important thing to keep in mind when considering online classes are your educational and professional goals. Choose a program that is right for you, will offer you the flexibility you need, and the respectability you desire to get ahead in the professional world.
