Successfully Buying a Used Car That Meets Your Needs

By: Jack Landry

Buying a used car can be a great way to save money on a vehicle, while trading for something better and more reliable. However, if you are not careful, prepared, and observant you may end up with a lemon, rather than a steal.

The key is to make sure that you do your research, come prepared to deal, and avoid mistakes that naive buyers make. Do not let the seller coerce you into a quick sale if you are not ready.

Make sure that you carefully look over all of the paperwork, to ensure that there are no mistake or typos that can come back to haunt you. Dealing with paperwork under pressure can lead to terrible mistakes.

One of the first things you want to do is to carefully inspect the vehicle you are considering buying. Check everything imaginable, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem at the time.

Look over the condition of the windshield, and if it is cracked, consider asking them to repair or replace the windshield as part of the deal. Check the tires, all of the electrical functions of the car, the radio, the carpet and upholstery, and anything else you can think of.

The more thorough your investigation is, the better you will be able to determine if the car is going to be right for you. Contact your insurance company to make sure that your car insurance is up to date-it is important to contact your agent to make sure you can afford the car's insurance premiums, and you have the right amount of coverage.

Closely inspect the title to make sure the mileage recorded corresponds realistically with the number you see in the car, and the age and condition of the vehicle. The mileage should not be lower on the car you are buying than what is recorded on the title without a great explanation.

Be careful to ensure that the title is clear of any loopholes or clauses before you give them any money. It is a good idea to have an experienced contracts professional, or even a lawyer look over the papers before you sign and seal the deal.

Make sure the seller has his or her registration and all accompanying documentation out of the car. You do not want to be presenting the wrong papers or title information to the police if you should get pulled over.

Make sure that you understand your state's policy on transfer of ownership, and what testing and checks you will need to have performed in order to register the vehicle in your name. Pending the inspection required by some states for used cars, you may be issued temporary plates for the used car you are buying.

Keep in mind that the laws are different depending on the state you are in-this is why it is important to do your research ahead of time. Do not expect the seller to allow you to use the plates that are already on the car-they are not in your name, and it is not legal to keep them.

Remember that most states will require you to pay the sales tax associated with a used car purchase at the time of registration. In addition, states expect you to pay the fair market value for the car and not what is on the bill of sale unless you can demonstrate why the car is worth less than market value.

Make sure that the car is completely cleaned out-if you are buying from a used car dealership, they should have the car cleaned and detailed for you. Make sure that there are no possessions from the previous owner left in the vehicle.

Give the car a good once over before taking possession. If you find anything that does not belong there, be sure to return it to the owner, or the dealership.

There is no need for incriminating fingers to be pointed your way. Just because there may be property in the car, does not mean that you have any right to it-this is considered stealing, and could be used against you.

If you are very careful when it comes to your inspection and paperwork of the vehicle, you can ensure that you will get the best deal possible, instead of being taken advantage of. The more thorough and detailed you are, the happier you will be with your final purchase.
