Stuck in Your Career? What Can You do?

By: Bill Weston

For many people, there is a stage in their career when they do not know what to do with themselves. Maybe they feel as though they have come as far as they can go, or maybe they feel as though they need a change, to start afresh and pursue a new career. For many though, this is tough as they do not know how to go about achieving their goals. The feeling may still be there but is pushed to the back of their mind and they go back doing the same job, day in day out. So what can you do?

If you feel as though you have come as far as you can within your job, perhaps you require some extra training. You may have a lot of experience in a certain field, but you may need to expand your knowledge and qualifications in order to progress further. You may want to consider looking at training courses. Many companies will offer training courses to their employees who wish to further themselves and grow within the company. Ask your manager if your company has any opportunities for courses that you could attend. If you were working in business, you could try a project management course. Project management courses would allow you to develop management skills needed to progress. You could also consider taking a project management course at an Open University or College, outside of work hours. Searching online would help you to find courses in your area. Similarly, whatever profession you are in, there should be some courses that you could take to improve your skills. There may also be courses that are available to take online, that you could do from the comfort of your own home.

For those of you who have decided that a career change is the best option for you, training may also be of use. Think about what it is that you would like to do and work out the best way to achieve it. Do you need to gain extra qualifications? If so when would you have time to do this? You should have an idea of what you want to do before you quit your job as you may not find work again for a while, particularly in the current climate. You could try training for a new career around your existing job so that when you leave you are qualified. Look for jobs before or after work and try and arrange interviews. This way you can ensure that you are not out of work for a long period.

No matter what you decide to do, training courses can never be a bad thing. You will always be better off after taking a course than before it. Expanding and developing your skills is useful as it enables you to do things that you previously wouldn't have been able to do.
