Spot The Obvious And Make The Changes

By: Amanda Greene

It is easier to start with projects to improve efficiency that are small and quick fixes. It's surprising that there are so many in this category, but if you look around, they are all around you. These are the kinds of things that by themselves aren't large deals, but when you add them all together, they really make a difference and really impede the process. It does not take much to put a hurdle in the road or a chink in the armor, or whatever else you want to call it.
The point is that even little things that may seem insignificant or little inconveniences at the most, will add up and help grind the progress to a halt. But the good news is that these are the kinds of things that are simple to fix and really help with the efficiency of everything else that is going on around it. So you need to pick out the things that it is possible to repair easily and then rapidly get them fixed.
Quit putting them off or even ignoring them, because they will not fix themselves and if you let the slack attitude go on for long enough, it begins to be part of the culture of the company. And once it becomes the culture or the norm, then it is going to be even harder to pull the ship back on course. Now when these changes are described as easy, that doesn't mean that there is not going to be any work involved and that there isn't going to be any challenges in getting them done.
It just means that for the most part, they will be less complicated than the big changes and won't shut the facility down when you are changing them around. These are things which can be fixed immediately such as cleaning up unorganized work areas and reorganizing them so that it does not happen again. It can be as easy as getting rid of obsolete tools that are taking up space and making it more difficult to find the tools that you really need.
In addition to having these things in your way, having these excess parts taking up room means that you are going to not have room to keep the parts that you really need. If you did not have this excess stock taking up important space, then you could have used that space for things that you really need, like new machinery that will help speed up the process or stock that is being used more quickly.
