The average cost of a gallon of gasoline decreased a wee bit from its highest ever prices just prior and gave some consumers a small break, but but the government curtailed the celebration by announcing that gasoline prices could rise as high as $4 per gallon this Summer.

The agency also predicted that gasoline consumption will fall during the peak Summer months due to the rise in prices which will come about because of increased useage during the Summer months. Consumption has already gone down for the first time in decades with the decrease increasing since the start of the year.
The chilling effect certainly has something to do with the fact that gasoline prices are 55 cents higher than this time last year
Crude oil's rise above $100 earlier this year is the main reason gasoline prices have been rising. Crude futures rose to a trading record of $111.80 last month, and have since traded in a range between about $100 and $110.
