San Antonio Medical Jobs for Secretaries

By: Frances McCurry

Medical secretaries perform work along the same lines as that of any other secretary, but must have knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, and laboratory procedures. Their typical duties include everything from scheduling appointments and billing patients to compiling medical records and writing reports.
How to Prepare
Most applicants can secure an entry-level secretarial position with only a high school diploma, but as the job market continues to get tougher, more and more employers are choosing to hire secretaries who have a college degree.
While most secretaries learn the majority of what they need to know through on-the-job training, applicants for medical secretarial jobs usually take specialized training in order to learn the language of the industry.
All secretaries should be proficient in word processing, writing, and communication skills. Advanced computer software skills also are in higher demand as more companies turn to technology to make their businesses more efficient.
Employment Outlook

During 2008, there were about 4.3 million secretaries and administrative assistants throughout the country, making it one of the largest occupations in America. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 471,100 of those positions belong to medical secretaries, and that number should grow by 27 percent by 2018.
