Safely Working in a Machine Shop

By: Jack Landry

It is very important to use power tools safely. Power tools can be quite dangerous when you use them in an inappropriate manner.

Serious injuries have occurred simply because of carelessness or because the tool was used inappropriately. These tools can be extremely useful when they are used properly for the appropriate tasks though.

They are often used both by those who like to take on home improvement projects on their own and by those who work on professional projects. It is important that they are used appropriately in both situations.

The first safety regulation you will want to make sure you follow is wearing safety glasses. When these big machine tools are used, they often send little pieces of dust, debris, wood shavings, shards of fiberglass, and other items flying.

These things can cause serious damage to your eyesight if they fly into your eyes. As a result, you will want to make sure that you are wearing the appropriate kind of protection instead.

You will want to make sure that you choose the correct type of safety glasses. The safety glasses you wear should have guard protection all around the outside of the viewing lenses.

If you find that the lenses fog up as you are using them, you may want to find the kind that have little vents on the sides. This kind still provides full protection, but allows the air to vent out so that you will still be able to see.

It is very important that you will be able to see clearly out of these things as it will affect your ability to use the machine safely. Safety glasses should always be worn when you are participating or observing these power projects.

The second safety regulation you will want to make sure you follow is wearing proper ear protection. Large power tools are often quite noisy and their continued use will cause damage to the ears.

While the noise may not sound too loud, it is important to wear protection from it anyway. This is particularly important if you work in a small area where the sound can bounce around a lot.

Make sure that you find a pair of ear plugs that will block out the noise level of the environment you are working in. Do not ever take them out while you are using a machine.

Instead, stop the machine and then take them out. This will make it much easier to hear the person you were trying to talk to anyway.

The third thing you will want to make sure you do is become familiar with the machines and what their jobs are. Using the wrong machine for the wrong task can also result in a serious injury.

This practice will probably also not produce the results that you were hoping to see. If you purchase a new machine for home use, make sure that you read the setup directions fully.

The directions should let you know what it is intended to be used for and how to set it up properly in a safe location. This is critical both to your safety and those who may be working in the same area with you.

The fourth thing you will want to make sure you do is learn how to properly use the tools. This first thing that you should already know is that power tools are not meant to be carried by their cords.

In addition, those that are not being used should be unplugged so that nothing unexpected happens. If the tool is connected to a power switch and you are trying to shift it, you will want to make sure that you stay far away from the on and off switch.

It is very important that you handle a power tool the way it was intended to be handled. Keep in mind that you can cut yourself on many of them, even if they are unplugged and not moving.

The fifth thing you will want to make sure you do is wear the right clothing. Clothing that is loose and baggy should not be worn around these machines because they have a tendency to get caught.

If clothing is caught, sometimes various body parts are pulled into the chopping zone. Long hair can also be dangerous in the machine shop for this reason.

Clothing should cover the entire body and not be too baggy. The appropriate kind of heavy duty work gloves should also be worn to protect the hands from the machines and from flying particles.
