Rwandan Trauma Expert Provides Insight on Genocide Consequence to Clinical Psychology Graduate Stude

By: Dominic Lin

With the recent unrest in the Middle East, and the military action that is currently taking place in Libya, it is only natural to think of the terrible events that took place in 1994 in Rwanda. This event was one of the worst cases of genocide, and took place against the Tutsi killing at least 800,000, and possibly as many as one million. This is further brought to light because the seventeenth anniversary of the one hundred day massacre fell on April 7th.

As the world paused to reflect on this horrible tragedy, the Chicago School of Professional Psychology's Center for African Psychology located in Washington D.C. decided to host an event that showcased the consequences of such a catastrophic event, the trauma the people of Rwanda endured, as well as the resilience and strength that subsequently sprung forth.
The speaker for this event was Dr. Vincent Sezibera, who is a senior lecturer for the National University of Rwanda's clinical psychology department, and also a therapist and consultant at the National University's Center for Mental Health. Dr. Sezibera specializes in the area of post traumatic stress disorders, as well as child and adolescent traumatic grief. He has studied and worked with young survivors of the Rwandan genocide events of 1994, and is uniquely able to provide insight on the consequences of these events to clinical psychology graduate students.

Dr. Sezibera has focused his interest on how economic programs and social networks impact the outcome following a traumatic event. He showcases how the hope and optimistic attitudes of the Rwandan people helped heal the survivors, restore optimism, and develop internal resiliency. Clinical psychology phd students can greatly benefit from Dr. Sezibera's teaching and the stories of survivors all over the world.

Dr. Sezibera is able to bring his teachings to clinical psychology graduate programs in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar in Residence which is made available to him through a joint effort on the part of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago and the Harold Washington College, also located in the city of Chicago. Dr. Sezibera also works with other psychology professionals and educators at the Chicago School in an effort to develop on campus and off campus discussions and meetings, as well as to publish works that highlight the effect of violence on young people all over the world, from Rwanda to Chicago and all areas in between.
