Roommate Dilemmas....How TO Make The Most Of A Bad Situation

Going away to school can be a fun and exciting time but it is not without its trials and tribulations. Most students and parents do anticipate the time it's going to take to adjust to living in a new and more independent environment but they fail to realize how difficult it is to live with a complete and total stranger in this type of new setting.
Actually people who come from home to college with a roommate who is from their area are the lucky ones but they are usually few and far between. On occassion friends or even a boyfriend and girlfriend will wind up attending the same college and living together either on or off campus but everyone else will likely wind up living with a total stranger.
In the current world, if you think about this practice it's not very safe nor does it seem like a really good idea and while you might believe that the college is carefully screening all the applicants and choosing only those that are the cream of the crop to move into the campus dorms, realistically they are taking anyone who can pay the bill and nothing more. If you want to find out more about your college roommate or a potential one then it's going to likely be on you to do your homework.
When at all possible it's best to sit down and meet face to face with a roommate or potential one and doing so will likely clue you in on many things. Much can be learned by actually interacting with somebody one on one and much can be seen in their eyes, the way they speak, and of course in the way that they carry themselves. Of course, this type of initial meeting should be conduted in a private place to help ensure the safety of both parties. If you choose to bring somebody along with you, don't have them come and meet the person, simply allow them to be nearby and observe from afar. The more individuals you have involved in that initial meeting the less information that you are going to likely gain through your conversations.
Another resource which can be very helpful in finding out information about your roommate is the internet. Online Google searches can help to connect you to an individual's Facebook account and other general information about the person. You can also pay a couple of dollars and do a criminal record search, which is quite possibly advisable if you are going to be living with the person.
When it comes to selecting a roommate you are unable to be too careful. If you find out any suspicious information about your roommate you can most certainly go to the school about it. However, if you do not find out something you will very likely be stuck with that individual even if you aren't happy you'll likely just need to suck it up and make the best of a bad situation.
