Restaurants with a View

By: Art Gib

Are you a quality or a quantity kind of person? Do you want large amounts for less money or are you willing to spend more for more quality? Do you buy three shirts you sort of like because they are on sale or do you spend the same amount of money on one shirt you can't live without? A closet full of stuff and nothing to wear or a minimal amount of clothes but you couldn't part with any of them.

People eat out for different reasons. Americans spend almost half their food budget outside the home on fast foods, restaurants, food courts in malls and airports, coffee shops and snack bars. Why do you eat out? Convenience is the number one reason. We overscheduled our days and dinner suffers. No time to shop, no time to prep, no time to cook, no time to clean up and no time to make menus so you can shop, prepare and cook in the first place. We also eat out because it is relaxing, enjoyable and feels wonderful to be waited on after a long, hard week. How do you choose your favorite restaurant? Is it food? Atmosphere? Menu choices? Location? Or do you choose a San Francisco restaurant with a view? Views of what? The city, the lights, or the ocean?

There are hundreds of restaurants in the Bay Area. Some restaurants are tight, compact, noisy, dark, crowded; some people feel at home in these places, it feels homey, comfortable, like you part of a party. Others feel more relaxed in a quiet, candlelit restaurant with peaceful views of the harbor, ships sailing and sunsets. Some restaurants are casual with order yourself, seat yourself and clean up after yourself. These styles of restaurants are growing ever more popular. The prices are good and the food is usually just fine.

Fine dining, elegance, romance, views, Australian kingfish sashimi, hand rolled cicchetti pasta with main lobster, pine nut crusted sardines or crisp Florida rock shrimp sauteed in champagne and leek risotto makes those serve yourself restaurants seem pretty cheap. So, what will it be? A week of fast food or one night of perfect dining? Is it going to be three shirts that are adequate, not interesting, or even very pretty or one exquisitely tailors shirt that you feel like a million bucks? The choice is yours, fast food, casual dining, snack bar or one night of fine dining on succulent seafood in a San Francisco restaurant with a view.
