Removing Ice Quickly From Your Windshield

By: Jack Landry

When you live somewhere that it snows or gets cold in the winter it is important that you know how to get ice off of your windshield. There are a lot of people that struggle with this because they simply have not been taught how to do it.

First, you want to make sure that you are taking the time to understand that you want to be prepared with the proper equipment. When you move to a new area with this type of weather you want to be sure that you go to the store and purchase the necessary tools.

Instead of being late for your morning activities, learn to get into a routine so you can plan for the ice. When you know how much time you will have to get the ice off of the windshield you will be capable of planning appropriately in the morning.

When you step out into a cold morning you want to make sure that you first turn on your car's engine. There are a lot of people that start to take the snow off of their car and scrape off the ice without turning on their car.

Not only can your car help you get the ice off easier when it is on but it can also warm up while you are working on removing the ice. Then when you get in your car to drive away it will be able to warm you up rather than make you cold.

After you turn on your car you should turn the heat level to high and make sure that the defroster is on low. There are a lot of people that believe they should both be on high to ensure they can get the ice off quicker.

An extreme change in temperature that happens quickly can crack your windshield. By having the defroster on low but the heat on high you will be able to ensure that your windshield does not experience that change in temperature too quickly and end up cracking.

Make sure that you have a deicing solution that you can pour onto your windshield. There are a lot of people that have a hard time remembering this and struggle scraping at the ice that is caked on to their windshield.

When you have a deicing solution you will be able to loosen the majority of the ice on the windshield. After you find a deicing solution you may want to put it into a spray bottle to ensure that you can cover your whole windshield quickly and efficiently.

The deicing solution is going to allow you to easily scrape off the ice. If you do not use this solution you may find that you are stuck on spots of ice for a long time and that you cannot have a consistent time for getting the ice and the snow off.

You should also be sure that you understand that while you are scraping the ice off you do not want to use anything metal. Some people think they can use a metal tip to get the hard pieces of ice off the windshield.

If you use a metal tip you may start to scratch your windshield. These scratches can be permanent and you want to make sure that you do not touch your windshield with any metal tips or metal surfaces.

When you cannot find a deicer you should make sure that you know how to make one from home. As you are attempting to make one from home you should be sure that you use 50 percent water and 50 percent ethyl alcohol or 50 percent water and 50 percent vinegar.

Both combinations will allow you to melt the ice quickly. Mix the solution thoroughly and keep it with you wherever you are driving to be sure that when you run into any ice build up on your windshield you will be able to get rid of it quickly.

You should also make sure that you start by scraping ice off from the outsides of your windshield. You want to be patient and you should be scraping the ice in a downward motion or in a sideways motion if you cannot reach the middle in that way.

Start by getting rid of a small square in the windshield. As you continue into the center you should be sure that you are able to reach all of your windshield with your scraper and remove all of the ice on the window.
