Relationships Are For People Who Have The Extra Time On Their Hands

By: Samuel Aperton

There is a lot to be said for the single life. You can do what you want when you want with no static from another person. Feel like going to an art show all of a sudden? Go to the art show. The gang is gathering for martinis down the street after work - go on down. You are free, over twenty-one and answer to no one but yourself.

Today's young generation waits longer than any before them to settle down with one person. Partly because no one gets a college degree in just four scant years and Master's degrees are required for many attractive jobs anyway, so college goes on for years. Marriage can easily wait until both partners are in their thirties and children, thanks to in vitro fertilization enables a woman to schedule family life when it suits her. Wait even longer and have a younger surrogate mother step in.

There is no time in the typical young professional's life for a serious long-term committed relationship. Sure, they have a career and maybe a hobby or two, but they must also check into Facebook and Twitter, answer emails, appear at the best social or business networking affair occasionally and tailgate with buddies for the home game, and that is just one day in the life. Life is a whirlwind of events.

All this whirlwind stuff gets expensive. The bar scene may not be the most ideal spot for meeting one's life's companion, but it does allow for social contact. All for the price of a drink or two at around $9.00 each, that certainly adds up. You also have the option of going out on a semi-blind date with other time challenged singles you meet on an internet dating site. Dating any more is not about finding a lifelong mate, but has to do with picking the right traits in a short-term companion. Some dating sites will attempt to hook up partners on the sole basis of likes and dislikes. These desirable traits may include everything from what kind of car he/she has to financial assets to the condo in the right neighborhood. Chemistry between partners is no longer an issue.

Today's singles may feel like they are running a relay race. The demands for their time are striking out from every direction. From one direction, they have work, graduate school and buddies. From another direction comes keeping in shape, financial planning and that charity 10k on Wednesday night. There is little wiggle room for today's singles.

It only appears that way, however. There are many ways to alleviate those stresses. The first might be to trade in that smart phone for a regular, conventional cell phone. Many people do use smart phones for business, but singles with stressful lives need to reexamine exactly how desperately they need them. If you spend most of your time scouring social media sites or playing word games with friends then your phone might be doing more harm than good. After all, you are working overtime to make up for that inflated data bill. Cut the overtime and the phone, and you may find all kinds of extra time that could be spent in the real world. Real time. Not five minutes “making an appearance” before you dart off to your next superficial obligation.

Not every single person lives a life verging on mania. Some are seriously fiscally responsible. Some do stop and smell the roses along the path to work. Some people remain single but play the field and spend the time to really get to know a few of them. Some do, yes, but most don't. It is good to be young, wild and free. Just remember, you are no longer in high school. Meditate alone for a while and you might meet someone you would like to know - yourself.
