Questions to Ask When Searching for a Jewelry Appraisal Company

By: Art Gib

Those who own several pieces of fine jewelry may wonder whether or not they should get a Seattle jewelry appraisal. On the other hand, those who just have one or two pieces, which include a wedding ring, may not feel a need to get their jewelry appraised. You should ask yourself, though, what would happen if the prized piece of jewelry were ever to become lost, damaged, or stolen.

Does a Homeowner's Insurance Policy Cover Fine Jewelry?

Many people believe that their home owner's insurance policy will cover the cost of fine jewelry. While insurance policies may cover the jewelry, the sad truth is that most of them do not cover the entire replacement cost of the jewelry. In order to cover your fine pieces of jewelry, you should get jewelry appraisals and take out a separate insurance policy on the jewelry.

What Should You Look for When Getting Jewelry Appraisals?

Ask the following questions when you are looking for a jewelry appraiser:

* What are your credentials? Jewelry appraisers should have formal training in appraising jewelry. For example, a graduate gemologist (G.G.) will have the minimum education needed to be able to accurately give a diamond appraisal.

* What associations do they belong to? Some of the major associations are the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NJA), the GIA Alumni Association, the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), and even the International Society of Appraisers (ISA).

* What appraisal methods are used? Uniform standards should be used with all appraisals.

* Are they full time appraisers? You are more likely to get an accurate diamond appraisal from those appraise jewelry all the time rather than from a jewelry store that only appraises jewelry on occasion when asked.

* Do they have references you can contact? Ask for a list of references you can contact. Great references are banks, insurance companies, and attorneys. Before you call them, make a list of specific questions that you want answered. Asking specific questions will give you more concrete information than vague generalities. For example, if you ask, "What do you think about this appraiser?" You're likely to get an answer like "They're good." Instead, ask a question such as "What do they do that causes you to have confidence in their jewelry appraisals?"

* What are their fees? Before you go, ask what the break-down of their fee structure is. Be prepared to pay more than $50 for an appraisal and a lot more depending upon the size and complexity of the piece.
