Put A Gutter Inspection On Your "To Do" List

By: Art Gib

There are many expenses that come with home ownership and it can be easy to put off some maintenance and home improvement projects that seem to be of lower priority when the budget is tight. One such area of maintenance that can be easily overlooked is the home's gutters. When was the last time you checked the gutters that protect your home by directing rain water away from the siding and foundation? Have you looked for any leaking? Are the gutters rusted or showing signs of rust? Are sections missing? Are they clogged with leaves and debris? Are the downspouts securely connected? When it rains, does all of the water flowing from the roof disappear into the gutters?

Gutters serve a valuable function for a structure. They aren't simply "extras" that keep annoying puddles from forming at the entryway or prevent the rosebushes from getting beat up from the heavy rain waterfall from the roof. They certainly accomplish those goals but more importantly gutters help to keep your home's slab sound by helping to maintain a more consistent moisture level in the soil that surrounds the home. Soaked soil expands. Hot, dry weather will cause it to desiccate and contract. This repeated cycle eventually compromises the foundation leading to very costly problems including a cracked foundation, masonry problems, sticking windows and doors. Additionally, water that collects at the foundation will find its way into the home somewhere and damage will result from wood rot, growth of molds and fungus, and more.

If you haven't inspected your gutters lately or had an inspection by a professional, Spring and Fall are excellent times to do it. First, check to see if the gutters are clogged with any debris. If they are, clean them out and check to see if there is uninhibited flow through them and the downspouts by running a water hose at various points. At the same time, check for any leaks. Those will most often occur at seams in the gutters that have weakened with time.

If you find leaks or rusted through areas it would be a good time to call on a gutter service company to do repairs or give you a quote on replacement gutters. Though they cost a bit more, a seamless gutter system will last longer and may be the most economical choice. You might also want to ask your gutter technician about a maintenance contract that can save you from having to worry about your gutters in the future.
