Planned Preparation for the CSET

By: Shiela King

The CSET English test can be one of the most difficult situations for teachers trying to get their certification for the English classroom in the state of California. The most feared thing in a student's mind is preparing for the CSET. I will examine this in more detail and shed some light on this CSET conundrum with different realistic techniques for you to receive good CSET scores and that ideal teaching position.

For sure, the CSET English test positively demands a designed preparedness. There is a strong body of evidence that soon to be teachers that prepare for the English CSET test attain higher scores than those who do not place much emphasis on preparation.

Following in this paper lets look at planning and then preparation. I have written this paper supported by feedback and tips from numerous winning CSET English students and from my realistic training in coaching test takers for the CSET English test.

The first thing I want you to think about is how much time do you get to prepare for the CSET English test. A few students may have eight weeks, some may have eight months. Your CSET English study plan out of necessity should be based on the amount of time you have to study. In arriving at a time schedule you have to look at:

1. Self-assessment
a. Strong areas
b. What you struggle at
c. Online course (software) or books

Doing a Self-Assessment

Ascertain if you need a CSET test preparation class by pondering your strong and weak areas of learning. For example, a few people could be good at reading from a book and then memorizing that information, while many may not have the ability to memorize information from a book and then recall it during the exam. If you belong to the first category purchase a inexpensive book from a major publisher and use free online resources and begin your studying based on them. This plan of attack will save you money. Yet know that a CSET English book or downloadable PDF is static and non-interactive and does not even begin to address memorization like my CSET English class does except for several quizzes that a publisher may include.

If you belong to the second category then be careful in choosing what study guides to use for the CSET English test as weak study guides saturate the market and only several good test prep books are available. Speak with teachers who have already taken the CSET English test and discover which one is the best and will fit your learning style. Just make sure you personally know these people. Do not take the word of an alias user in a public message forum. In the test preparation industry, publishers or their employees will often create fake personae in public message forums to promote their products. Even the customer feedback on Amazon.com must not be trusted. I have seen quite a few people fail the CSET English test because they took the advice of a fake teacher from a CSET English message forum.

A good online English course is ACE the CSET English by Confab Publishing. Students say ACE the CSET English best corresponds with the actual CSET English test. ACE the CSET English has lots of outstanding interactive activities such as: chronology, fill-in, matching, point and click, and even crosswords—must have exercises for those who wish for additional help learning the materials needed to pass the CSET English test.

The class also promotes visual and audio learning in that it provides several hours worth of video streamed from popular websites like YouTube and TeacherTube plus our own exclusive CSET English educational videos. The course needs no special software and students can access the class with a browser and Internet connection.

There are a few free resources available for the CSET English test on the Internet. I do not recommend CSET message forums because of the risk mentioned above regarding dishonest publishers who post in a public message forum just to sell their own products, goods, or services. My feeling is that if a teacher needs to post in a CSET message forum under an alias account in order to promote business for his goods, then the products, goods, or services must not be that good in the first place. That publisher or teacher would be wise to spend more time on product development than on dishonest marketing tactics. A good product or service will generate plenty of business by honest word of mouth referrals from students who achieved certification, like my online CSET English class. Another reason I do not recommend CSET message forums is that often, it can be the blind leading the blind. Data is often posted in forums that is erroneous and filled with errors. Finally, CSET message forums are very time consuming. Often days of CSET preparation are lost scrolling through egocentric, conflicting, and emotionally charged messages. It can take hours of scrolling through chit-chat messages to find valuable information. This is not effective time management in preparing for the CSET English test.

Several free websites that are great include Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg.

Do not forget, a passing CSET English score can save you 1000's of dollars by getting you that ideal teaching position quickly, as opposed to not passing and delaying your teaching career. So focus in on how you will approach your CSET English test preparation.
