Network Like a Pro

By: Dexter P. Morgan II

It's amazing the power of word of mouth advertising and the affect that proper networking can have on your business. Most potential customers will take the word from a friend over that of a print advertisement. In fact most people have to see something in print more than 7 times before they even considering purchasing the product.

There are a large number of small business owners that don't do any networking, and the biggest reason is that they are scared. Public speaking is not an easy thing to do and it frightens most people. I have a few tips that can help you get over this fear.

First lets address the fear of public speaking. This is not as difficult as you may think; it does take a little bit of practice and preparation. I have listed a few things you can do help you get over this.

1. Be prepared - practice, practice, practice what you are going to say. Professional athletes practice the same drills and plays over and over again day in and day out; so that those actions become habit and can performed without thinking and can react to the situation. You have to do the same thing.

2. Be prepared and have all your marketing materials ready the night before and make sure you get plenty of sleep.

3. Some may say on the way to a function, listen to your favorite type of music to help you relax. I personally do the opposite and listen to music that motivates me and gets me pumped up. Which ever works for you to put you in the zone!

Now I I have developed the perfect plan for you to develop your own rejection free 30 second advertisement. The key to this is knowing that your job at a networking event is not to sell anyone. Instead you are trying to figure out a way that you can help the others in attendance get more prospects and in turn how they can help you. It's always been a false perception that people at a networking event are all going to be prospects, if it works out that way then great but it's not the purpose.

1. Introduce yourself and your company name.

2. Now rather then saying what it is you do like I am a business consultant, or I am a landscaper. Create a 1-sentence statement of what you do, for example "I help small businesses to achieve their business goals and aspirations."

3. Insert one maybe two important industry fact, for example if you're a landscaper you may say there are over 50 different types environmental factors that can destroy a persons yard." (Now I'm not a landscaper, and I'm shooting at the hip here. This is just an example of the type of thing I'm talking about.)

4. Lastly tell them who the perfect client is for you. Basically this is your target market. And then ask them if they no anyone like that to please have them contact you. This is a friendly way of asking for referrals in a very rejection free way.

5. Your target time here is 30 seconds long.

Create your own advertisement and practice, practice, practice. Do this and you will be able to network like a pro!
