Making Small Repairs on Your Windshield

By: Jack Landry

When you are driving you may find that a rock flies up from a car in front of you and hits your windshield. There are a lot of people that have a hard time understanding how they are going to fix their windshield.

If you are not confident in your ability to fix the windshield appropriately, you will want to take the time to go to a professional. It is important that you have your windshield fixed properly the first time around.

If you are trying to fix your windshield by yourself and you mess it up, you may have to have the windshield replaced. Make sure that you take the time to understand what you are going to do to be sure that you are fixing it properly.

As you are attempting to fix the windshield properly you should also be sure that you understand how much it costs to have it professionally fixed. You may find that the cost to have it professionally fixed is well worth it.

When you are deciding if the cost is worth it, you will want to make sure that you factor in your time. After there is a compromise in the integrity of your windshield you will want to make sure that you have it fixed as soon as you possibly can.

When you are fixing the windshield yourself you will want to start by cleaning the windshield the best that you can. Be sure that you clean out the crack of the dent in the windshield as thoroughly as possible.

You should make sure that you use a razor blade to get rid of any of the small debris that are in the crack. As you are cleaning you should also take note of any small pieces of glass that are falling off and try your best to remove those.

As you are planning to fix your windshield you should be sure that you take the time that you need to find a repair kit. When you are looking for a repair kit you want to find one that has the resin in it that you will need.

Within your repair kit you should have a suction cup tool. This tool should allow you to put the resin directly into the chip or the crack and you want to make sure that you familiarize yourself with this tool and that you know how to use it properly.

You are going to have side arms that come off of the suction cup and they will have an x-frame. Do not rush through this process, but you want to make sure that you are able to position the main suction cup right over the crack of the chip.

As you are positioning it, make sure that you get into the car so that you can see the suction cup sitting right over the problem spot in your windshield. You want to make sure that you take the time to position the suction cup the best you possibly can.

After you have the suction cup positioned properly you will want to use their apparatus to put the resin into the crack. Do this quickly and then use the suction cup to make sure that the resin is sitting as far down in the crack or chip as possible.

When you have the resin into the crack you should then remove the suction cups from the windshield. Make sure that you take the time to smooth out the resin by using a flat side or even a rounded edge of a razor.

The kit that you are using should include a protective sheet that you can put over the resin. This will ensure that nothing gets into the resin or disturbs the evenness of the resin while it is drying and settling in the crack.

After you have applied the protective sheet you want to make sure that you take the time to let it settle. Allow the resin to settle for at least ten minutes and when you know that it is completely dry you should then take off the protective sheet.

After you remove the protective sheet you should scrape all of the resin that is on your windshield and not in the crevice or crack. Make sure that you take the time to understand how you are going to do this without scraping your glass or causing more permanent problems with the surrounding glass.
