Making It As A Dancer

By: Art Gib

It seems as if finding jobs in this economy is harder than ever. Well, the truth is that finding a job as an artist has always been tough. A college degree does not guarantee anything in the arts where your success is largely based upon your talent, not just your degree. That principle, of course, is similar in many other careers, but it just seems a little different when it comes to being an artist.

I am a college graduate with a dance degree, and the question I often get is "Now what?" For many people who pursue dance, especially all the way through a college degree, there childhood dream may have been like mine--performing professionally on stage. The trick now is to get yourself into a company.

Whether you are looking for Cincinnati dance, Milwaukee ballet, or anything you can find in New York City, it can be a challenge to find a professional company to dance for. Here are a few tips.

First, audition for everything. Yes, it is not always free to audition, so the costs may start adding up, but if your goal is to make a company, then this is an important step. Auditioning is a whole separate art from simply dancing. You have to know how to present yourself, how to learn quickly, and how to fake it if you do not know what you are doing. You gain confidence and experience every time you audition. You may meet people who can help connect you to a different place where you would fit in better, and you will get a feel for the style of the company.

Next, you have to be somewhat aggressive. Just like in the business world, networking is key. Company directors are going to hire those dancers whose faces they know and who they can trust. You have to make them know your face, and you have to let them know how dedicated and determined you are. Go to company classes if they are offered, attend summer workshops, talk directly to the people in charge to see what they might be looking for and whether or not you could have a future there. Be confident in your skills and do not turn around at the first "no".

Finally, realize that you may not be happy in just any dance company. Do your research about the company and get to know them. Again, go and take classes and get to know the company members and staff. You want to find a company whose style and feel fits you and your ideals.

There are dance companies everywhere...Cincinnati dance, San Fransisco, Colorado. If dance is your dream, get out there and dance!
