Love, a four letter word

By: K. Laurel

Love... perhaps the most powerful word in any language. This tiny one syllable word has caused warfare, treachery, and madness, but it can also cause serenity, unpredicted thrills, and incomparable inspiration. How is it that a thing that should be so great can push us to so much evil? The French, acknowledged for romance, have many captivating love stories to tell. For example, the story of the sculptor Rodin and his apprentice Camille Claudel. Claudel worked for Rodin when they fell for each other. His unwillingness to leave his wife for her drove Claudel insane and she smashed a number of her works of art during periods of paranoia a symptom of her schizophrenia. Claudel spent the last 30 years of her life in an insane asylum. How can a power that can drive someone to such depths of anguish be the one thing that we all want in this world? In contrast, let us consider another french couple. Voltaire and Emilie du Chatelet shared a 15 year long romance which was looked down upon by the people, but tolerated by Chatelet's husband, the Marquis Florent-Claude du Chatelet. Chatelet and Voltaire shared a healthy academic relationship and spent time philosophizing together, gathering books for the library, and offering recommendations on each other's findings in mathematics and science. Their shared values and loyalty to each other fueled their love even after her death. After her death, Voltaire wrote of Chatelet, "It is not a mistress I have lost but half of myself, a soul for which my soul seems to have been made." In spite of her arranged marriage to the Marquis, the affection between Chatelet and Voltaire was accepted and not envied. They were the topic of contempt but were permitted to spend their lives together in shared admiration. Their story shows love in its ideal form. In my experience, love is the one thing worth living for. Whether it's love of family, love of one particular thing, or love for a spouse, an absence of love life is trivial. Maybe that is why love can drive us to such extremes. For some of us, love is worth dying for. For many, it is worth living for. As Valentine's Day approaches love is on everyone's minds. I wish you a cheerful love story filled with all the best love has to give and none of the worst.
