Leather Harley Jacket or Synthetic? Make the Right Decision

By: Ken Av

Looking for a Harley Davidson Jacket? If so, you have a wide array of styles and materials available to you. As a Harley rider, you are lucky to have several excellent choices when deciding on a jacket. The downside, of course, is sorting through all the choices to find just the best one.

The two main options are some type of synthetic or leather. Once you make that decision, you've won half the battle. There are pros and cons to either, but in the end it really comes down to an issue of personal choice.

If you are searching for a classic leather jacket, no amount of discussion will change your mind. Stick with me for a moment, though, and let me discuss the varying choices available.

If you are unable to wait, you can locate a selection of showcased Harley Jackets here.

Harley Leather Jackets

When you're talking about good style, leather cannot be beat. It's luxury feel and silky exterior are unmatched and never go out of fashion. There are many different types of Harley leather jackets but, in general, leather offers fewer options for color and design than synthetic materials.

An additional possible drawback: leather can sometimes be overly hot. The weight of the leather presents a tradeoff -- heavier leather offers superior protection but can be unbearably hot in the summer. Many jackets offer tiny holes in the leather to offset this problem, but it's not an ideal substitute for the adaptability offered by synthetics. Thicker leather also has a longer "loosening" period and can be stiff at first.

A quick thought on leather measurements: leather measuring less than one millimeter in thickness is considered lightweight, whereas leather thicker than 1.5 millimeters is very heavy. More about leather weight can be researched on this website.

Synthetic Jackets
Jackets manufactured from synthtetic materials may fall short of the timeless styling of leather. But a synthetic may be extremely stylish in its own right, and may provide much more in terms of functionality.

Synthetic jackets are available in a variety of materials. The most common is Cordura, an abrasion-resistant material that is often used in backpacks and luggage. Cordura jackets are often coated so that they can be both water resistant and breathable, like Gore-Tex. Jackets made of Cordura also typically come with interior body protection in the elbows, shoulders and/or spine. Opt for CE-rated pads for the safest level of protection.

Next, since synthetic materials can be easily dyed, they are often sold in a wide variety of color choices. Finally, synthetic jackets are often very configurable -- some have openings that supply extra circulation, or washable inner linings for extra warmth.

This site provides a good comparison of the ups and downs of synthetics versus leather.

Nylon and Denim Jackets
Other kinds of materials will present their own value equation. Denim, for example, provides a unique proposition: a type of timeless look which is desirable to some, while being cooler in the summer than leather. Nylon, for example, offers durability and some of the cooling options of a synthetic but, depending on your taste, doesn't offer up the classic looks of leather.

Harley Women's Jackets
A short thought on ladies jackets...
Biker jackets have progressed over the years, to the point now where the rider can find stylish options that are uniquely designed with women in mind. Most of the synthetic jackets are unisex, but others are specifically intended for women. Choosing leather provides a wide range of choices for tailored, classy women's jackets.
