Learning Styles - Or The Ways People Learn

Good teachers are comprised of many things. They have compassion for their students, expertise of the subject matter they are teaching and the commitment to form several study groups and keep their offices open to students around the clock.

I will give a resounding “yes” to all of the above. It isn't any just one element. A brilliant chemist may get chemistry into the minds of some students but not all. Being outstanding in your field doesn't necessarily mean that you will be outstanding in getting your expertise across to others. To do that, you need to understand how people learn.

Learning Styles

Each student learns a bit differently. You may know your best learning style, but if you are going to teach others, you need to know their best learning style as well. Before you step up to the plate to help shape impressionable minds in any way, you must have an understanding of how people learn.

The 4 Main Types of Learners:

1. Those Who Learn By Seeing. I used to work with a guy who could see you do something once, and never needed to have it explained to him again. Those who learn by seeing are people who learn best by following you around and watching you actually do the things you're teaching them how to do.

2. Those Who Learn Audibly. Some people listen once and get it. Once something is verbally explained to these types, they are off and running. For these students, a clear, concise, simple explanation in its most basic form will have them well on their way to being informed.

3. Those Who Learn By Reading. If you are one who throws away the manual and starts digging in to all the pieces of the thing that needs assembly, you are not one of those types who learn by reading. Others do learn that way so be sure whatever it is you are teaching, be sure you have the directions and examples written down clearly for this group.

4. The “Do It” Learners. These guys have to do it to get it. This includes everything from cleaning a pool, to sky diving to rebuilding their sick computer. To find their way somewhere, they must go there and once done, will never get lost.

The fact is that most of us learn using a combination of the above methods. They may watch the teacher do something then do it themselves. They may carry the manual in one hand and the screwdriver in the other while assembling that bar stool. They may be listening to an audio tape of instructions while reading the instructions. Whatever the situation, we all learn a bit differently. The effective teacher knows this and understands how to capitalize on the learning styles to get the material across effectively to everyone.
