They are happy to be at home and may well live comfortably in apartments providing they are taken available regularly. They are strong and heavy and are easily trained. Hence they are also used as police pet dogs and drug sniffers. They could be especially trained to be companions for the blind and the handicapped and they can sniff drugs and are used as watchdogs. Given that they respond to training, they could be especially used in many ways and tend to be useful in anything. Also, they are called 'St John's pet dogs. '
