Is It Worth It To Market On Twitter?

By: Dani Mattinson

A couple of ago, it was tough to dismiss the buzz online about Twitter marketing tools. Twitter was regarded as a terrific new way of getting a list of people whom you could target to advertise your products. Cutting through the hype, just what sort of results can you look forward to after employing these Twitter marketing tools? We shall now talk about Twitter marketing and whether or not it is worth your time and expense as part of your IM tactic.

Like many of you, when all the tools came out to help people build a huge Twitter following that you could promote to, I decided to try it out. Not only did I pay to join programs that would bring me followers but I invested in a number of softwares to help promote the products I was selling. By the time I'd finished, I'd paid for something like eight programs to carry out some of the grunt work involved in Twitter marketing.

I purchased a program that would automatically follow people for me in an attempt to get them to follow me back. If a person was not following me, I had another program that would automatically remove them from my to-follow list. This would enable me to follow different Twitter users once more to get them to follow me. Amongst other programs I purchased, there was one program which automatically tweeted a blog post just as soon as it was posted to my blog. Initially, I was genuinely delighted with the end results after using the programs in combination because they truly delivered on what they promised. I was speedily brought down to earth when I looked at my spreadsheet and realized that I wasn't actually making any money! Every day I would post approximately ten blog entries knowing that they would then automatically be displayed on Twitter also. Thinking that more blog entries would increase my blog traffic, I arranged for my daily blog posts to be made automatically both to my blog and to Twitter as well.

Well, let me share my results: In three years, I was able to build a Twitter following of roughly ten thousand individuals. I bet you think this is an awesome number, but I'm not done yet: During those three years I had affiliate links to my products on no less than fifteen thousand blog posts in my Twitter account. Other than that, I did no other promotion for that blog, as a matter of fact I didn't even ping the new blog entries to discover how good Twitter was could be. Well, you can't say that 3 years isn't long enough to obtain good results but using Twitter I just got 2 - 4 visitors daily to my blog. My affiliate earnings from 2 sales was $47 and to that you can add $8.65 Adsense revenue - very dismal all around!

In a nutshell, having approximately ten thousand followers on Twitter using all these tools will not give you the results you want. As a matter of fact, in the last 3 years I have not even made good money from that blog to pay for the Twitter programs that I had invested in. So in my personal opinion, though there may be good ways to promote on Twitter, using the automatic softwares are not the way to go.
