How to Use Gold Test Needles with your Gold Test Kit

By: Samantha Dale

You can do just about anything yourself these days. With a little help from the Internet, you could be able to build your solar panel, fit your own window frame and now, with Gold Test Kits and needles, you can be your own jeweler. Isn’t it fun to know the gold you bought is really in the right Karat?

The real question is how to do it. To test the purity of your gold accurately, you have to know how to use Gold Test Needles. Gold test kits have all the K solutions but they will tell you more when used with Gold Test Needles.

This is because Gold Test Needles are used as a color and reaction reference to compare with your unknown gold. If you know how to use it, you can benchmark the k of your gold by using them. So to be able to most effectively use a Gold Test Kit, you have to understand the use of Gold Test Needles.

Your Gold Test Needles must be of the correct alloy to be able to give the right result. You need to recognize the correct needles. You have to make sure you only buy your supplies from reputable dealers or manufacturers to ensure your set will have the correct alloy mixture.

Once you are sure, you can do the following steps to determine your gold’s purity.

Let’s say for example you want to determine your 10k ring is a real 10K.

Scratch the ring to the test stone provided in the Gold Test Kit.
Select the 10k gold test needle. Scratch it as well beside the line created from the scratching the ring on the test stone.
Drop some 10K solution; again, comes from the Gold Test Kit, on both of the scratches.
Wait for some reaction. You can evaluate the reaction looking at how the sides of the scratches dissolve or may have some discoloration.
If both the gold test needle and the ring scratches have the same reaction, then the ring is a 10k gold value.
If the ring’s scratch dissolves faster or disappear completely while the gold test needle doesn’t, then you better long up with your jeweler, your ring is likely to be less than 10k and is possibly not gold at all.

There are instances that you don’t need to compare the scratches. This is if from the beginning the results are obvious, like if the scratch from the ring produces a black line instead of a yellowish color then it is pyrite or popularly known as a fool’s gold.

Jewelry, especially gold, is said to be an investment. It is best you know if what you are investing in is a pure gold. That is why it will give you in an advantage if you know how to test the purity of your gold with the gold test kit and needles, testing it will be an easy thing to accomplish.
