How to Prepare Your Garden and Yard for Spring

By: Jack Landry

When you begin to get spring fever, it is hard not to get the itch to start planting. Springtime flowers and grasses are some of the most beautiful, and getting ready for this season can be tons of fun!

There are many ways in which you can prepare for this time, even if the winter thaw is just barely starting to occur. The first thing that you must remember is that you cannot control Mother Nature and when the seasons come.

Part of the joy of gardening is working on your patience and training yourself to wait for the opportune moment to plant. This is the same for the waiting of the seasons.

As the year passes, certain times are better than others to harvest and plant; it will be very important for you to pay attention to these and not try to "jump the gun" beforehand. Otherwise, your garden may not be ready and you may not have the best blooms possible.

If you are unsure about how to plant your blooms or your lawn, you may want to request help from a gardener or landscaper. You can also most likely ask assistance from an individual working at a nursery or at a home store.

These individuals tend to have specializations and will probably be able to tell you about the gardening or lawn care topic that you are unfamiliar with. As far as the types of plants that you will want to use, that will be up to you.

Those that are perennial, or bloom each year, will definitely need some pruning and taking care of if you want them to look their best during spring and/or summer. Fall and winter can sometimes be supplemental seasons for growing if you live in a climate that is warmer.

However, depending on the temperature and climate where you live, you will need to determine which the best time to do some gardening clean-up is. When this does occur, make sure that you rid the area of any debris or organic items that could potentially decay and ruin the health of your plants.

You may find that you need to do so with the help of gloves, especially with shrubs and flowers that are thorny or have sharp sides. This will also keep your hands from getting too grimy, just in case the winter thaw has left mud or moss within your garden.

Clean out any leaves or things that have been left to sit there for too long. If you hope to recycle it somehow, you may be able to turn it into mulch for fertilizer.

However, if it has already decayed or is too soaked to dry, it may be best not to use it. Proper pruning depends on the type of shrub or flower that you are hoping will grow once more.

Pruning trees is another great thing to do when preparing for the change of seasons. You can even use the branches that you trim off to create beautiful wood carvings.

Many individuals who live in colder areas try to force spring upon blooms and trees so that they will be able to appreciate blooms for longer. Sometimes this is effective, while sometimes it may not work.

You may have to go through a process of trial and error to find out the best way that works for you when it comes to doing so. The process itself should be very easy; it just requires the individual to brace the wintery cold to do so.

If this does not scare you, you may want to give it a go! First off, you will have to find the types of trees and shrubs that are easiest to force spring on. If you try to do this on one that is more resilient, you may waste your day spent in the chilly air.

Types that will bloom indoors are the best, seeing as this is the area where you will be attempting to get the branch to blossom. You should be able to cut branches in late January, after they have had a sufficient dormant period.

Cut buds that are swollen or look the biggest; they will provide the best blossoms. As spring approaches, it will also be necessary for you to perform good lawn care and prepare your grass for the season to come.

If you are unaware of how to do so, you may want to enlist the help of a professional. Preparing for springtime can be exciting and fun and give you the opportunity to prepare blossoms to bloom in glory!
