How to Freelance Effectively when You Work a Full-Time Job (and Want to Eventually Quit)

By: Yuwanda Black

Many freelancers who eventually go on to quit their day jobs -- whether you're writer, graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, etc. -- start their businesses on the side. It can be an exhausting time, especially if your goal is to work freelance fulltime, as opposed to someone who's just looking to pick up some extra cash here and there.

Following is some insight into how to freelance effectively, ie, build your side business into a self-sustaining one while you hold down that fulltime job.

2 Keys to Successfully Building a Thriving Freelance Business While Working a Full-time Job

Know Your Freelance Personality: This is, without a doubt, the number one key to achieving success as a freelancer. And, it is critically important when you're doing both (working and freelancing on the side).

The reason is, when you're juggling a lot, you have to be razor sharp. And, you can't do this if you're constantly working against who you naturally are.

For example, if you know you're not a morning person, then telling yourself that you're going to get up at 6 am to get your marketing out of the way before you go to the office is kidding yourself. Sure, you might be able to do it for a few days, you may even last a week or so.

But eventually, what you are and how you're wired is going to eventually come through.

Why put yourself through this?

It'd be better to forego lunch and get your marketing done then. This will not only make your day job hours go much faster, it'll keep you motivated because you'll be doing something every day towards making your dream of working freelance fulltime a reality.

Don't Bite Off More Than You Can Chew: This falls under the "learning how to freelance effectively" category. While you may be anxious to quit your current job and move into a fulltime freelance career, when you take on more than you can handle, you're not effective.

And, it'll show in your work. You'll miss that one editing error, make that one lighting mistake, miss the mark on that one illustration that'll make clients hesitate to hire you again.

An easy way to prevent overworking yourself (and under delivering to clients) is to think of each one as a possible source of five more jobs -- whether it's for them directly, or in referrals that they send your way.

Would you take your time and do an excellent job if a client said to you, "If this one is done to our satisfaction, we have five more projects we'd like you to take on?"

This is, in essence, what a client says when they hire a freelancer. Most of them want to work with you again and again and again. But, your work must instill the "you can count on me every time" confidence in them. And you do this project by project, job by job.
