How Websites Are Helping To Spread The Joy Of Classic Films

By: Layla Calter

Go into any movie rental store in any town anywhere in the country and you are sure to find the latest Hollywood hits (good or bad) in the most prominent spot. What is far more difficult if not impossible to find are the classics, films like “The Thin Man” or “My Little Chickadee” that you used to surreptitiously watch as a kid when you were supposed to be asleep.

This disheartening lack of availability is leading to a lost generation who do not know the Swamp Thing, who thinks Edward Cullen is the hottest vampire of them all and to whom Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo and Cary Grant are names their parents uttered when in search of some dumb show.

Do not despair. Because of copyright protection, many of these films have entered the public domain introducing new viewers who only know about classic television to the far wider world of the silver screen classics and what stardom really means.

What is Public Domain (and Why Does It Matter)?

Films are played in the public domain when there are no intellectual property rights influencing how and when they can be used and distributed. This makes it easy and convenient for websites are to distribute these great classic films to a wide audience without the exorbitant overhead costs that go along with royalties and so forth.

What does this mean to movie viewers like you, you who have waited patiently for that classic you yearn to see to come to either the late movie channel on TV or finally make it to your friendly neighborhood video rental store? Websites like Hulu and Amazon are required to pony up some scary licensing fees to be able to put copyrighted material on their sites. This results in a very limited selection. The more esoteric films will never appear in the selection. Film buffs the world over are left wringing their hands in misery and searching madly on eBay in the remote chance that a fellow film buff has decided to part with his original copy of “M” for some reason.

Come now, like any genuine film aficionado would part with “Metropolis” let alone sell it to a complete stranger.

The Internet IS the Public Domain

The internet is a whole opened up new world when it comes to the public domain. The internet can be accessed from anywhere by anyone at any time.

The internet is not an esoteric tool used by the few. It is a universal one used by everyone all the time. A wonderful thing about this is that an entire new generation has access to the classics, in their original form, instead of pale remakes that are probably not true to the film the original producers had in mind.

Make your world bigger. Get your film buff title and let your kids in on the fact that there is a wide wondrous world beyond “Twilight” and the “Green Lantern.” When movie night comes round again, don't pile in the car to get to the nearest Blockbuster, log onto the web and find those classic film features just waiting in the wings to once again prance across the silver screen even if it is a small one.
