How To Fit A Door Lock!

We all know a door lock plays a large part in the security of our home. Your home will be safer if stronger and better quality door locks are used. Whilst most locks are easy to install, it can be a bit more difficult to choose the correct door lock for each specific door. Consider the design, size and function of the door along with the door lock’s specifications. For example, a small-sized door lock fitted on a big door could potentially look awkward and might not serve its purpose of providing the maximum security in your home.

Installing a door lock is comparatively straightforward, that is, if you possess the correct tools and you know what to do. But, before we go any further, you need first to pick the correct door lock for you making use of these guide lines below:

Selecting the right door lock for the job:
1. Determine if your door is left or right handed. Stand outside the door and find out where the hinges are installed. The hinges will be located on your right if you have a right-hand door, and the hinges will be on your left when you have a left-hand door. A variety of door locks will fit in any of those arrangements but some will only fit with a particular door hanging. Left only or right only.

A bore hole with a diameter of 2 1/8" is meant for a cylinder lock but when you see a large pocket on the border of your door, it is designed to accept a mortise lock. However, if your door is customized you can choose whatever type of lock you wish so long as it serves its purpose well.

Installing the door lock:
1. Take out the lock template and fix it to the door. Your new door lock should include a paper template which will illustrate how the lock is supposed to be fitted including the positions of your screws.

2. If the door does not possess a pre-drilled hole for your lock, start drilling a hole according to the measurements shown on the paper template. At all times drill pilot holes for the screws too.

3. Mount the lock in place. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer to fit the lock or, if you happen to have misplaced it, begin by fitting the latch through the wall of the door followed by the door knobs. Install and line up the connecting rods, and check if the tail end of the cylinder is attached to the proper slot on the body of your lock. Fit the screws to secure the door lock in position.

4. If you don’t have an existing lock strike plate on the door frame, make room for one by using a chisel. Check the installation guide for instructions and measurements. Finally, fit the screws on the strike plate and try the lock check that it works.
