How Do I Keep Myself From Periodontal Disease?

By: John Chambers

There is a big possibility that Americans who are aged beyond 34 might lose their teeth. The fact of losing teeth at an early age is not because of tooth decay. Older people are in fact less likely to have cavities.

According to what they call it, it is known as periodontal disease or commonly known as gum disease. Either way, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Adults are most likely to have this wherein in one community, one third of them would have lost their teeth because of periodontal condition.

Gingivitis is the early form of periodontal disease wherein the gums become inflamed and bleed after regular brushing of the teeth. The destruction of the tissues and the roots of the teeth that are surrounded by bones is called periodontitis or pyorrhea wherein this is a much more severe condition.

This is because there is tartar or calculus built up in the teeth area. Tartar begins with the mixture of food remnants and some substances in the saliva.

Bacterial plaque is also another term for this invisible film. You need to remove this everyday because if you don't, it will cover your teeth and gums.

Once the disease gets worse, what will happen is that gums become inflamed then start to let go of the teeth. The accumulation of food particles and bacteria trigger inflammation to take place.

You will know that your gums are definitely in a bad shape once pus starts to form and damaged tissues spread in your gums. Finally, the supporting bone structures and tissues of the gums are destroyed; the teeth finally loosen and are eventually lost.

By simply brushing the teeth and gums regularly, one can prevent periodontal disease from taking place. Aside from brushing the teeth, the use of pressurized water which is highly recommended by dentists today can really eliminate the small substances that go in between the teeth.

To get the best results, one has to follow the dentist's instructions upon using this device to fully eliminate the excess food debris from the teeth and gums. If you really want to maintain a good set of healthy teeth, it is important to visit the dentist twice a year. You need to go to the dentist at once to have your gums checked and treated once it bleeds and if you feel any kind of soreness.

Other conditions that may lead to periodontal disease include misalignment or malocclusion of the teeth, the sharp edges of worn fillings or decayed teeth that could hurt the gums, and ill-fitting partial dentures. Your gums will definitely be infected due to these factors. Leave this matter to the dentist and everything will be fine.
